basswood is a cheaper wood, and lighter in some cases, it has similar tones to alder or ash some say, allot of companies use it on cheapo instruments, but sometimes they use it to make the instrument weigh less, like G&L some of their L2500's will have i think an ash top with basswood behind it, and i think they might have done that to make it weigh less, or The ernie ball music man Bongo is made from basswood, i am not sure on their reason why though, but just because something is made from basswood, does not make it bad either, the only down side of that wood is that it can be a little soft, thus denting more easy, but in the case of the Bongo they used a thick coating in the paint to keep that from happening some kind of acrilic i think?
