hey guys, just joined the forum and wanted to introduce myself. I been playing bass for around 4 years, play mostly spanish music (norteņo) and have a g&l l-2500 tribute in blueburst (dont know what year it is, i bought it from ebay for $450 a year ago) and I have a Ampeg SVT-3 and 410HLF... here to learn more about this bass and get some tips and tricks on bass playing and hopefully learn to play a new genre of music. well, hope you guys can give me some advice on how to get that punchy bass tone i want. If i cant get it out this bass maybe later on I will add the audere 3zb to it, but hopefully i dont have to.

I have a similar bass & rig as you can see in this picture (although my bass in this pic is a US L-2500 fretless). It has plenty of punch, although its a relatively "clean" sound -- I frequently use a 1-15 Mesa Boogie cabinet to get more grit in the tone. The L-2500s can provide an amazing range of tones, so give it some time and experiment with the various settings. I think you'll find that you don't need to replace the preamp. Also, string choice can affect tone as well -- I use TI SuperAlloys on this bass and really love the deep, growly sound.

Enjoy....

maybe i can post up some videos of how i want my bass to sound like, and u can help me with the settings on the amp and bass. Also wanted to ask how low is your string action ?? is it as low as the ibanez or a lil higher ?? i dont feel that mine is that high because I'm used to it but when other people grab it they say its hard to press down the strings.

well, you need to set the bass the way you like to play -- if you play with your fingers, you may want a different action than if you play hard with a pick. mine is a fretless & the action is pretty low.

regarding the sound -- you should play around with different settings to find something you like with your style. -- i tend to use both pickups with the bass & treble rolled back just a bit. far as the pickup coil switch, i prefer the bass boost mode, but some folks don't. i also typically use it active, which adds more punch.

i play with my fingers, and i think my biggest problem is that the E and B string sound like rubberbands... not really good tone out of them. They sound really flat. if anyone has any suggestions for the amp/ bass/ settings, and maybe different strings, i use the D'Addario EXL round wound, medium gauge, bright. maybe i need some different ones for the tone im trying to get.
