Noisy L2-L2.5s?

Sign in to disble this ad
I've encountered various comments here and there about the "noisy" electronics of some L2500s or L2000s. Poor shielding, etc.
But I've also spoken to many G&L players who've never had an issue with the stock electronics/shielding of the bass.
Is this more a random occurrence/thing of the past/urban legend?
Seems crazy to me that something as otherwise well-built as a US G&L would skimp on something as basic as shielding . . .or, is that why you don't see tons of them in pro session guys mitts, etc.?
Or maybe it's not shielding, but something to do with the MFD design?
Or, maybe it's a myth . . . .

After reading several reviews, I bought my first G&L, an L2K in 03. That year, they started shielding the electronics cavity more appropriately. I've had no noise issues with it at all.

In 07, I acquired my L2.5K and have had no noise problems with it either.

These are both MIA instrument and that may be somewhat of a difference.

I got 2 96'er L-2000. Never noticed any noise problem at all. Not in studio, not in live situations. I don't know what these people are talking about...

I think some of the pickups can hum particularly when matched with the G&L preamp. Its not an every bass kinda thing, but sometimes the stars align. I had one US made that was very problematic when the preamp was on. The Tributes ground the pickup core. I think this is a huge help along with the cavity shielding.

I've had older & newer MIA and two trib's. ...still have a Trib L2500, looking for another. No noise problems in any of them.

FWIW - the Trib's appear to have a better shielding grounding scheme than the MIA's I've owned.

With a JB-2, L-2K, L-1500 and SB-2, the only pickup I have found noticeably susceptible to hum is the bridge pickup on the SB-2. No problems at all from the SB-2 split pickup. This is from a practical, gigging viewpoint.

I've not had any particular problems, older, or newer...

Sometimes, in older basses, the ground wire under the bridge and get pushed into the wood, and lose contact with the bridge. If touching the brdige or strings cures the problem, try pulling the bridge, moving the ground wire out of the trough, and re-securing the bridge.

I've got a little noise in parallel mode on my L2500, but I suspect part of the problem is that my bridge pickup has stopped working as it should (broken coil wrappings?). Anyone have an extra MFD humbucker they want to sell me?

Thanks Chef,

I wonder if they would re-wind mine for me?
