nut filed too low

Sign in to disble this ad
has anyone else found that the groove in the nut is filed down too low on the A string? I have 2 L2K's and they both have fret buzz on the open A no matter what I do - so i took a piece of foil and placed it in the nut to raise the string up just a bit and it worked. any suggestions on what i can fill in a little of the groove with that will work better and be stronger that a piece of foil - i was thinking about trying a little bit of some kind of epoxy like "quick plastic" or something like that. And if you're wondering the gauge i'm using for the A string is 85 - same as it comes with from the factory i believe.

Somehow, with all the talk of shaving "down south", I thought you had somehow archived your "junk", and couldn't find it.

baking soda and super glue works well.
make sure your string is wound low on the tuner peg so there is down tension at the nut.

Chef, you're suggesting mixing the super glue (CA-type?) with baking soda? I don't doubt that it'll work, but what exactly does the baking soda do--replicate the tone of bone?

It does work, I've done it.
Sprinkle baking soda in the nut slot, apply superglue, let it dry, file to shape. You'll likely not be able to see the repair.
Easier than a whole new nut.
If you have a better material to replace what's missing from the nut slot, please suggest it...
Ask this in the luthier's forum, you'll find this is an old and well known fix.

I'll file this in the back of my small brain for future reference. Thanks for the tip!

I've filed down some extra nut material for the dust and mixed that with superglue, but the baking soda method sounds much cheaper + easier- I'm definitely going to try that next time I need a fix!

If just a strip of tin foil fixed it for you, it won't take much...
