OK. Now what do I do?

Hi All,

I just bought a Lynx pup off eBay, $35 w/ shipping. So what do I do now? I was thinking, before I bought this, that I would build another bass with a Hipshot based piezo bridge from Graphtec.

The piezo idea still resonates, but would I do it as a SB-1? Or mix in a new split coil MFD pup?

I am leaning towards the SB-1, as I don't know how well a modern pup would mix.

And body wood? I would like a 'hog bodied bass, as I have ash & alder already. I think that maple would be too bright for me.

To give you an idea, I play a GK 115, 100 watts, 15" driver, w/ flats. I like that low down sound, no highs. Jaco I am not.

Ideas & thoughts welcome.

A modern Split MFD, such as in the SB-2, probably wouldn't be a good mix with piezo. More like over-powering in a Transformers kinda way.

I think a Lynx mini-bucker and piezo would be cool if the electronics worked out. WRONG! NO, NO, NO! Jim's right - the Lynx is SC.

I think an El Toro mini-bucker and piezo would be cool if the electronics worked out. Reason? The native quietness of the humbucker would allow the piezos to shine. Single coil noise could hide them a bit.

Mahogany would be nice if you can kind a light one.

If your expectations of piezo on a solid body bass is something leaning toward an acoustic sound, you'll be disappointed. They'll add sizzle & a percussive thump to the magnetic sound, but will probably be a bit anemic on their own. I have piezos in my Bongo 5HHp and that's the way they work on that platform. Others have said similar things about other platforms. Not at all a "woody" tone.
