Old L1000 sighting, with suspicious tale

Sign in to disble this ad
I went to a local dealer today that had a few used G&L's to see whether or not I liked the necks. They had an old looking L1000 there. Pick it up and start piddling around with it. Guy working there tells me it is the 3rd one ever produced. States that Leo stuck a gold pick in the neck pocket and wrote in marker (pink I beleive was the color he said) the number "off the line" on the first few hundred basses. That is how he knows that it is the third one ever made. This sounds like a big 'ol bunch o'hooey to mark an instrument up a extra couple $100 to me, but thought I'd ask whether or not anyone knew if there was any truth to this tale or not.

I wasn't in the market for a L1000, just wanted to see whether or not I liked the neck. Am I correct in presuming that this is the same neck as on the new L2000's and SB2? ie: same 1 3/4" nut, same radius, etc...

Sounds flakey to me, but you might want to check over at the "dudepit" some real G&L buffs there.

I'm kinda interested in which dealer you were at. I've never been able to find much used in OKC. Then again, I only get down there once a month or so. PM me if you don't feel like posting the dealer's name here.

Thanks.

oh ...and the neck is similar, but on the earlier models like that they had the skunk stripe like 7enders. The newer ones use the bi-cut neck.

All of the G&L necks are a little different from each other even if the specs are supposed to be the same. One of the quirks of owning a G&L.

I've no issues with posting the dealers name. Lone Wolf Guitars on north side of Southwest 44th between Western and Blackwelder (next to the hospital). They seem to usually have one or two older G&L's and a few older fenders in stock whenever I drop by there. I like them better than say Horn Trader (don't like that place at all) for used gear.

G&L's website lists Jenkins Music in MWC as a dealer. I haven't set foot in that place in years so I don't know that they don't have any in stock. Heck, they could've closed up shop for all I know. Suppose I ought to call and see if they have any in stock...

Old necks were usually 1 5/8 not 1 3/4 like today.

If a true early L1K it will have large bore hex poles, a skunk stripe neck, and a chrome bridge.

Have him pop the neck and show you this mythical pick and Leo's writing. The only reason a pick would be in a pocket is to be a shim. Since it had the microtilt you will find no shims.

I vote hooey. Go to the G&LDP and ask there. Gabe is good friends with Dale Hyatt and has interviewed many ex employees. He will probably get a laugh out of this.

What's the serial number? It should be right on the front of the bridge.

It had better be B0005XX if it's the third one off the line. B000544 is for sale on eBay right now.

I had a 1980 B0010XX, but had to let it go as the neck was a mess.

I can't say I remember exactly. I think the asking price was $850, but don't quote me on that. If you would like me to check, I'll drop in next time I'm in the area and check.

You dont really have to. I was just curious. I was in the market for an old G&L and that one got me a little excited
