The outer coils/parallel/inner coils mod is great!

I found that, since I play through a Sansamp PBDDI, I never used the series setting - it's too thick as it is in parallel!

I replaced the series/parallel switch with an outer coils/parallel/inner coils switch. Now I can solo each coil, pair the two inner coils, pair the two outer coils, or go with standard parallel. I love it! I find that the outer coils sound a lot like a 70's Jazz. The inner coils together are like moving one of the pups to the center and it's a powerful sound.

Here are some clips I made through my SAPBDDI:

The differences sound subtle in the clips, but they aren't through my amp!

Is there a way to do that without altering the Series/Parallel switch, like adding another switch? I love the low-end boost I get in Parallel mode but a true single coil mode would be sweet as well.

There is a series/single coil/parallel switch mod. I had a hard time making it work, but I might have been wiring it incorrectly. If you want the wiring mods I can email them to you.

I used that diagram for the series/single coil/parallel switch, but it didn't work for me. I might have wired it wrong, though. I started with the s/sc/p switch and then, when that didn't work, went for the oc/p/ic switch. It ended up being perfect for what I wanted. If I need deeper or bolder or whatever I can just program that tone into one of the footswitches of my Sansamp Programmable BDDI.

That stinks you couldn't ever get it to work for you! I never tried the insides/parallel/outsides, but I did try both single coil possibilities by themselves when I was trying to figure out which to use with the series/single coil/ parallel setup. I ended up choosing the inner coils because I didn't really dig the thinness of the outer coil on the bridge pickup.

The wiring mods are sort of a pain in the a@@, as you need to solder so many darn wires in such a small area! I wouldn't be surprised if there was a little miscommunication regarding which wires went where... Good to hear you found a setup that you liked- I personally don't think I could do without the series mode though!

You can replace the series / parallel switch with a 3-way switch. Here is what I have done:

https://home.comcast.net/~carol7david/GL_Wiring.doc

The biggest problem is trying to decide whether to go with inside coils or outside coils. I think the inside coils are more useful, but the outside coils have a nice 70's jazz sound. Great for slap. But sort of thin compared to the insides.

I just picked up a 3-way switch for my Tribute. Not sure if I will go inside or outside singles but I will keep series and parallel. I may add a push pull pot that would get me all four combinations.

It's okay, but thanks for all the help! Like I said, I really never use the series setting, and if I need thick I can get it no problem with my Sansamp. As it is I have to cut the bass on my L2500 when playing through the Sansamp or it's all thickness! I actually really like both the outer and inner coil settings. The outer bridge coil is quite thin, but I like the neck outer coil and together I think they sound more Jazzish than the inner coils together. The inner coils together are really punchy and thick, and the inner neck coil has a really nice tone!

I shielded the control cavity with copper foil and I think that's cut down on the hum. They mystery now is why the amount of hum changes when I haven't changed anything! I was playing through my friend's SVT4 Pro and initially I got monster hum when I soloed a coil, but thirty minutes later the hum was almost gone. I didn't change anything and it didn't seem like anything changed in the room. I get the same thing in my house sometimes. Sometimes all settings are silent and other times I get hum when in parallel (!).
