price for a 1983 l-1000

Sign in to disble this ad
hi g&l folks and fans,

i'm still in love with my '77 stingray but would like to go for a l-1000. i've never played one but this bass arouses my curiosity.
i live in germany so i have to deal with higher prices compared to the united states - first of all it's hard to find an old l-1000.
i found a 1983 for 700 euros - that's about 1100 us-dollars - puh. and this bass is more than 500 miles away so i can't play it.

what do you think - is this price ok?
as a stingray-player, is the l-1000 really an option for me?
is there something i have to know about the production of the l-1000? for example like the problem with the trussrod of the old musicmans in the time from 1979 to the early eighties.
any parts where i should have a closer look?

thanx a lot for your help,
heho

EDIT: forgot to mention that th3 '83 l1k is in pretty good condition, mahagony body (sunburst), maple neck

Never touched a L1000 myself, but AFAIK it's more like Precision than it is like Stingray. Maybe you should try L1500 if you like Stingray sound. It won't be the same, of course, but closer anyway.

Just had my 1980 L-1000 maple neck looked at by Neil Sargent today in Houston. He says there's no fixing the "S" curve in it...which means I'm stuck with the high action. I'm not sure about 1983, but the 1980 I have has a problem. You should definitely play the one you're going to buy.

thank you folks,

i'm not looking for a typical stingray sound, because if i want this i'll take my sting - and i love vintage instruments with soul. a 1500 is to new for me.
ma question was more about the feeling of the bass, how does the neck feel or things like that. as a stingray-player, will i feel comfortable on a wunkay?
but i think i'll have to wait till there will be an offer around my hometown - but that can take very long.

Before you abandon ship, call Michael Dolan. You may be surprised at what is possible.

I don't buy "can't be fixed". Even the most hideously deranged necks can be fixed. It's a matter of skill and cost.

Heho, you are referring to this offer, right?

http://www.bassmarkt.de/bassanzeige....verkaufen-9249

The $ exchange rate has recently dropped, so 700 Euros equals just under $900. You wouldn't be able to import this bass from the USA for that kind of money, so I think it is a good deal. I just sold a Wunkay which wasn't in as good a shape as this one for 640 Euros on eBay.
