Question Problems with my new G&L

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi, I have just get a new Tribute G&L L-2500 on thursday 24th.

The bass is fine, but I have a problem with a combination of the parallel/series control and the pickup selector. When I switch the bridge pickup in series, the bass practically don't produce any sound. When the series/parallel switch is in parallel, there isn't any problem, and any pickup combination works perfectly.

I'm really worried cause this is my new bass and I'm not in USA, so sending the bass to G&L factory would be almost impossible.

Can someone help me with this?

Contact the seller. Or contact G and L themselves.

What about trying the neck pickup alone in series? Does that work?

It may be a wire for the bridge pickup popped off the switch. That is an easy soldering fix.

In series any wire popped off, or hopefully not a bad coil, will kill the output of that pickup.

Tap the poles with a screwdriver in parallel and make sure both sets cause a *pop*. Don't have your amp cranked just a little will do.

In both modes, active and passive. All the rest of the positions are fine, but the bridge pickup doesn't sound when I play in series, no matter if the bass is in active or passive mode.

The neck pickup alone in series works perfectly.

I tried the bridge pickup with a screwdriver and there is a coil that pop much louder than the other one. Do you think there is a problem with the bridge pickup or could be a wire?

Open the control cavity and look at the middle switch. There is a set of wires from the neck pickup and an identical set from the bridge. On a USA they are yellow, black and white.

Make sure none are broken off. The problem is either going to be the wires, switch or the pickup coil.

Got a multimeter to measure resistance?

Jim

Hi, I opened the control cavity already and everything there seems to be ok (no broken wires).

I have a multimeter. What should I do?

Go look at the schematic and ohm out the coils.

Call the dealer too that you bought it from.

I'm not very good at electronics, could you tell me how to do that?

Thanks

Perhaps it would be a good idea to ask someone who's more experienced with electronics.

You bought it new?
Take it back to the seller for repair or replacement.

Take it back to the dealer and let them deal with it.

Any electronics tech worth their salt could look at the scematic and ohm the thing out. It is too much to explain the how of doing it.

But what should I do to figure out if it's a bad coil?

You should take it back to your dealer. It's the easiest route.

I just realized I was having the same problem with the neck pickup in parallel. I hadn't really messed around with parallel that much.

Turns out it was just a wire and a five second soldering fix.

Scroll down for a great wiring schematic for the L2000.

Not my work, but I wish it was.

The resistance reading on the White and Black wires and the Green and Yellow wires should be the same on both the neck and bridge pickups. About 10K.
