Yeah, looks black to me. The paint has faded slightly, and most black paint is comprised of other pigments including red or blue colors, so between the fading and the light you're seeing an underlying bluish quality to the black finish.

Thanks for your assessment. It is the sickle headstock. I will post the photo I took of it also.

It's black. Black G&Ls, especially from 1989, often had a hazy bluish cast to them. Also, there's something very funky with that fingerboard. It appears to be a slab board and G&L didn't switch to slab boards until mid-1992. Could be a replacement fingerboard?

The color on my L5000 has held up nicely, no noticeable fading.
I love the tone of this bass & the spacing doesn't bother me one bit. I'd buy another one in a New York minute!! Preferably white.

Enjoy your new bass, it's a keeper

I love mine, too, and will hopefully leave it to someone in my will.

Yours looks nice with the pearl guard. Do you still have the original guard ?

Interesting, but I have never seen a white one.

Red, black, natural, Lake Placid blue, Bahama blue, Belair Green, cherryburst, sunburst...but never white !

Several are in the registry, so they do exist !

Mick, I do have the original crinkle guard, Stumbled upon the
pearl guard w/ pick-up on the bay & snatched it up.

Also, there's something very funky with that fingerboard. It appears to be a slab board and G&L didn't switch to slab boards until mid-1992. Could be a replacement fingerboard?

What does a slab board look like. I took the fingerboard (pickguard) off and the bottom had the same black crinkly treatment as the top, with the exception of the three holes for knobs and jack. There was about a half inch of bare metal (aluminum?) surrounding each opening. The treatment of the pickguard seems the same as the treatment of the bridge.

Thanks for your help.
