Quality consistancy?

Sign in to disble this ad
The neck profile of my L-2000 is #5; wide and round. I bought it from eBay, and I love the bass! Except, I really think I'd like it even more with a #8 neck, narrow and flat...

I considered ordering one, with a nice colour and matching headstock to boot, but I'm hesitating... What if this new one doesn't sound as beautiful as the old one?

That's why I ask the ones among you with multiple G&L's: how big are the differences between the individual basses? I know no 2 can be exactly alike, but how big is the chance of a 'lemon'?

Thanks,
Ray

I've had three necks on my L-1500. The first went back with a truss rod problem, and the second was #7 when it was supposed to be #8. This was a major hassle, but gave me the chance to compare multiple G&L necks, and I think the wood quality and finishing were uniformly excellent on all three. G&L clearly takes care with its wood selection, which is a big deal to me. Obviously the faulty truss rod was a quality problem, but G&L has since adopted a different design that should be more reliable.

The number 8 neck is not narrow and flat. In fact its pretty fat compared to a Jazz neck. I don't own multiple G&Ls, so I can't comment on their consistancy.

The number 8 is narrow at the nut but they are a little chunky around as compared to a Fender.

I just played my L-1500 with #8 and 2003 Am. Ser. Jazz back to back, and this is right. The G&L has a slightly fuller rear profile, but the additional chunkiness is truly minimal. I think most J players would adapt easily, even instantly, to the #8 neck as I did. IMO, the bigger difference is the flatter fretboard on the G&L, but my Jazz could use a setup, and its slightly higher action could influence my perception of the difference.

I have two JB-2s and they are very consistant with quality. The rear contour of the second one feels a little bit fatter then the first one. Just a bit. Maybe cause it is new but both play, feel, sound excellent.

Ya there are slight differences in feel from one to the next.

G&L's were hand built, after all.

It's one of the things that gave each bass its own personality.
