single coil mod : inner or outer?

Sign in to disble this ad
My question is simple, i'm about to mod my trib L2500 for single coil sound. Is there any differences between inner and outer coil? What mod is better for all around bass playing? and if i want to keep parralel and serie, is there possible to mod with inner "and" outer.
Thanks for input
Francis

I only have inner, so i can't comment on a comparison.

I did come up with a way to do inner AND outer, but decided not to do it when I modded for inner. Basically, you could use a push/pull pot to cut out just the inner coils...in parallel mode, this will leave you with only the outer coils giving you signal. In either of the other positions, it would act as a kill switch.

There may be a more elegant way than this...

I also did inner coils- you could have both via a switch as suggested, but my guess is that you would immediately prefer one over the other...when I was trying to decide, I just simply preferred the inner coils of both pickup when soloed- I had originally wired it the other way, but found the outer coil to be too thin for my tastes on the bridge pickup and too muddy on the neck pickup... I've considered trying the other way again (mostly just to have the extra bassy neck pickup coil), but am pretty happy with my current set up for now!

You could wire you bass with the stock parts to be single coil inner / single coil outer. See sticky up top. Takes about 15 minutes with an iron. When you figure out what you like better, put in the three way switch and do the one that sounds best to you.
