Slot Pole pick up question

Sign in to disble this ad
I just got a wunkayHog and it has slot pickups. I had heard about having the slots lined up or something making it sound its best ? What is the preferd method of setting up this pickup. I did a search and went through the thresda but did not see anything directly refering to this.

Thanks for your help

Woa delivered already?!

I think Leo's intention was to line them up all one way, either parallel to the strings or perpendicular. I tried both but only heard a slight variation in tone. I could have been imagining it though so I just lined them all up parallel and left it. Try it and see what you prefer. I love that pickup...

Its really a matter of preference. I have a feeling you just recieved my old L1000 via Metron? Awesome bass- the OMG mode on that L1000 is a speaker killer!
I was convinced that there was a bit of a difference with the dynamics of the attack more than anything when I fooled with it- with the slots parallel to the strings there seemed to be a sort of "airyness" or bloom to the attack, if that makes since- whereas perpindicular placement made the sound a little more punchy to my ears. I ended up chosing perpindicular, but the difference probably wouldn't even be noticeable in a band setting (may have all been imagined as it was!).

I did just get that LWunK And it sounds totally dufferent from my other Maple bodied LWunK Much darker and still clean and sharp on top. The OMG postion is really deep but Yeah I cuess at GIG Volume going from either one of the other positions to the OMG could wreck some speakers. This Bass Sounds Killer. It has found a permanent home. I might try to ret some shine back into the front but that is all and it does not look too bad as it is .

i have a '81 L1000 with slotted pole pieces...you just have to listen and determine what sounds best to you...a little turn can make a "big" difference in tone and volume, but it may not be something you will notice when playing with other musicians. the important thing is to have the volume and tone balanced from string to string--unless you want it differently...it's all up to you.

With my rudimentary understanding of how pickups are made, I just don't see how it matters which way the slot is facing. Does it tighten/loosen something? Add more turnings? Please explain.

yes...i should've clarified...i just meant raising and lowering the pole pieces will affect tone and volume...obviously the shape of the poles themselves, particularly the amount of negative space created by the size of the slots, will affect how the pickups "pickup" the vibrations of the strings (due to lack of magnetic material created by said negative space), but i don't think which direction the slots are actually facing will be noticeable under general playing conditions. even balance of volume and tone across the strings, and not having strings contact the poles when you're playing, are the most important things--and to achieve that you just have to play and listen.

Thanks for the replies. I was just unsure of the deal and I guess it really does not make a lot of difference.

The slot in the poles does actually have some small effect on the magnetic field.
Turning the poles perp or horz to changes the field; unlike moving a hex head...which leaves the field the same since the hole is, essentially, round.

Small but discernable difference. Try it both ways, listen, choose.

i tried to adjust slot poles a few weeks ago and... no big changes. If i raised up or screwed down there were no particular changes to my sound. Had more results by just adjusting pupd height.
