Sound difference between TribL2k and American Deluxe?

Sign in to disble this ad
So I've been really interested in the tribute L2K, and i'm lucky enough to have a dealership close to me that sells G&L stuff. Unfortunately, they don't have the tribute in and I can't order one just to try. They do, however, have an american deluxe! (not that i can afford it >.<) So in terms of tone, what is the difference between a tribute and american deluxe?

"American Deluxe" is a line of USA Fender products. So by "American Deluxe", I assume you mean a USA made L-2000.

Comparing a USA L-2000 and a Tribute L-2000 with the same body wood and neck size, the tone will be essentially the same. There will be some natural variances from instrument to instrument, so don't expect them to sound exactly the same. But for the purpose of "Will I buy one?", auditioning one will usually cover you for the other.

Is the tone difference between the swamp ash and the basswood significant?

From what I've heard, Basswood resembles Alder more than swamp ash. BTW, they make swamp ash Tribs, too.

Yeah I know about the swamp ash tribs. That's why i'm wondering about tone differences...i found a basswood tribute online for $573 CAD which is AMAZING! Basswood only comes in black though, and i like the blueburst/maple combo. Additionally, the USA L2k that i have available to demo is swamp ash.

Strings have a sizable influence here, but a swamp ash bass will generally be a little brighter and snappier than its basswood counterpart.

You have fine taste. My bass? Why it just happens to be a Blueburst/Maple Combo! I prefer Ash myself though the sound difference isn't really that pronounced, certainly you can still EQ it where you want it with minor adjustments.

Go to the Warmoth site, then click on Bodies, then click (I think) on Woods. They describe how different woods sound on a brightness scale.
