"That Sound" epifani

Well, I actually feel a bit stupid posting this, but maybe it will help someone else.

I have changed strings, and basically looked at a number of ways to get the tone I have been looking for - that punch that hits you in the gut... I re-read all the postings in this forum that had to do with producing a sound, and am not sure why I never realized that the tone controls were not boosts, but were cuts.
I have had the volume up, and had a lot of bass cut (which I thought was a medium bass boost), and same with the treble...
So when I realized that they were cuts, I turned the bass all the way up with just a bit off the top, and put treble at medium, turned volume way down in order to compensate, and whoa... my "sound"... The guitar player turned to me and asked what I did to my bass, and wondered if I had put on an effects pedal... I have had such a weak tone, and finally figured it out... Like I said - pretty dumb in retrospect, but if it helps anyone, it is worth it.

Amen Brother! Until very recently I held the overly neurotic idea that the bass's tone controls should be set to the neutral position with no bass, treble or middle cut or boost added at any time so that I missed out on the positive potential of my sound. The knobs are there for a reason. Every amp and/or PA system sound different.

Oh wait, you meant an epiphany.

Glad to hear you found your sound in it. Now do not be afraid to actually use the cuts do dial up different sounds.

One of the absolute worst GAS problems is buying another bass when you haven't explored all what your current bass can give you.
Did you post pictures of your bass hmmmmmm?

Like you, I'm a big fan of the Epifani punch.

With a parametric eq, I do a mid cut at 800Hz about 6-9dB and 320Hz about 3dB. Bass and treble boost comes primarily from Bartolini pickups/preamps.

I recently picked up a 210UL to go with my 410UL and I think I'm DONE - the combo is awesome. Separate Stewart power amps.

Yeah, I did not use spell check. I am usually pretty good too, but it looked right - no doubt I was just thinking of the speakers... there is a reason they are named that right?

I did post pictures in the Show your G&L forum. It is a clear dark green L-2000 with a rosewood board.

I also have followed your GAS problem, and actually have a MM Sterling on its way to my house. I think that I will have fun with it though, and hey, if I don't like it I can trade it for another G&L.

HA! I was thinking to myself "Another happy G&L/Epifani user!"

That pre on the L2k is genius. Shoot, I don't even touch the bass control. I just leave it all the way up. Maybe cut some highs now and then, but that's it. I try to let the switches do all the work for me.

I see you are also using the sansamp with your rig. IMO sansamp and G&L go well together. I've gotten to where I won't be without mine.

Actually that is a pic from when I was testing a SABDDI. It isn't my thing at all.

Every now and then I pull it down to tweak with it and put it right back.

Speaking of Epifani, I just got back from Vic's house where we had a small get together to check out each others rigs,basses etc... Got to play Trevorus' G&L tribute L2500 through Vic's Thunderfunk through KJung's Epifani ultralight 410. WOW!!! I think I've got gas again.
