a strange looking g&l I found...

Sign in to disble this ad
hello,

My name's Chris this is my first post here, so I hope I m respecting the protocole...

I have a question:

Last night I saw a bass player who had what he said was an SB 1 from '83. Now I myself have 2 g&l's, more recent, and that one did not look anything like mine.

For a start it didn't have the famous g&l head, it looked more like a Sadowski kind of shape. I checked the serial number it's B012767 if that may help. Does anyone know if G&L at one time designed their heads differently?

There is only one pickup right in the centre shaped like a JB2 pickup sort of.

Can anyone tell me if such a bass is worth anything or if it appears to be fake? Any opinion is more than welcome as the owner's selling it.

Thanks.

It's real...they had a Fender style headstock until the Fender company asked Leo to stop it...so he invented the current "eye-gouger" headstock.

And the SB-2 used to be like a Jazz bass, with the SB-1 having just one of those pickups. This was all in the early '80s, IIRC, with the original headstock lasting on a couple of years.

a picture would help a lot,although it sounds like a 1st gen SB-1.

you can see examples of various G&L basses at http://www.ggjaguar.com/gnl.htm

well thanks guys, yes it looks exactly like that orange SB1 bass on the link you sent me, earlgrey. The pickup and the rest are the same as the one I saw yesterday.

Any ideas on how much such a bass might be worth? Though on the one I could buy the neck's a bit twisted and apparently the truss rod's ruined.
