Thinking of giving up on one of my L2K's!

Pulled out my L2000 with the standard neck on it the other day after it sat in the case for months, and I just don't dig it anymore. I have another one identical, but with the ASAT neck, and I think I'm ready to pick only one at this point. Sort of sad really, it was my first G&L, and was with me on a lot of gigs. I'd hate to break up the pair.... Anyway, how many of you "moved on" and decided that it wasn't right for you? Whether you went from L2000 to ASAT or SB2 or whatever! Did you give up on your first G&L?

Here's the twins suntanning...

I bought my first G&L new at the end of 2002. It was a TSB L-2500. It suffered from a slight microphonic pickup issue and on a couple of occasions, picked up a radio signal while I was on stage. Rather than fix it, I sold it and wandered through the land of "brand F" for a while.

After an American Deluxe P V and and American Deluxe Jazz V failed to satisfy my desire for tone, I went back to G&L.

I now own 2 L-2500s, one fretted and one fretless.

If you get rid of the one with the ASAT neck, I'd buy it.

That's not the one that'd be going

Is the one that is going a #7 neck or a #5? Also, what is the age and is it a 3 or 6 bolt neck?

Sold my first- an L2500- after owning my L2000e and SB-2 for awhile. I loved the L2500- and the tone won me over on G&Ls for life (well maybe!). I just don't need a 5 string, and never felt as comfortable on it. Oddly enough, I actually prefered the tone slightly on the L2500 to any L2000s I've tried- a little more aggressive and midrangey. Wasn't worth keeping though, as the L2000 can get close enough with a little EQ.

If you don't dig on the wider neck, and don't use it...flip it and get something you will use...

I still have my first G&L, a '98 ASAT bass. However I did pick up an old used SB-1 as a backup. It served me well for 2 years but I’ve recently sold it. I'm currently on a musical hiatus and saw no need for 2 basses. Anywho, I think it wise to let go of the G&L you no longer have that loving feeling for. If you dig the ASAT neck and find you still have a need for a 2nd bass, I'd recommend getting a SB-2. It will still have the comfy J-neck but the tone and vibe of the instrument will be different from the L2000. I've never seen the practicality of having identical basses. However owning a 2nd bass that's tonally different yet is familiar enough not to feel completely foreign seems more practical and potentially more fun.

Saying goodbye is hard to do but stay strong, Todd. No point in keeping a good bass in her case neglected when someone out there would love her to death.

The fretted one is a piece that was on display at G&L's Summer NAMM booth. I bought it after it was released to a dealer for sale. It is FMT in honey with natural wood binding and gun oil tint on the neck. Probably the best bass I have ever owned as far as "agressive" tone. My only complaint about it(and a minor one)... it is heavy.

To answer your question, Flame-Maple Top is an "additional-charge" option. I believe that G&L quotes $550 for flame and $750 for quilt maple.

Well Jimtoonz - yes I feel your fear. I sold my first G&L a custom L2K in cherryburst with binding. What a bass.......BUT.....that binding just cut off my circulation so it had to go, and it went.

Since then I have traversed the G&L planet - L2K, L2Ke, L1K, SB-1, JB-2, LB-100, L-1500 with the latest one being an SB-2 and I concur with the other poster - another flavor is definitely the way to go.

BUT you have the most important point of all - it might be a G&L and a great G&L but if it's a heavy G&L - it is out the door!

Good luck

I sold my first L-2000, a natural with 1.5" nut and rosewood board, mainly to fund a purple L-2000 with 1.625" nut and ebony board. For me I have so many different hobbies and expenses that I can't justify owning two of the same exact bass. Plus I don't make any money playing (as of now).

Giving up on L2Ks

I have a Lefty 1981 G&L L-2000e, this was the first good bass I ever owned. It has the "normal" head stock, which G&L was later sued for by Fender.

I looked at Fender @ the time, too much $. I got this thing new @ Griffin Music in St Louis Mo for $735 with case. I still own it. It blew all the fenders away hands down, plus with the series switch on & the neck pickup selected it has a very nice "P" bass tone, so nothing missing there. I don't think you can get a great "J" Bass bridge pickup tone out of it, but it does the fusion thing great.

I wouldn't part with this bass for nothing, it is a natural mahogany body, rosewood fret board, black hardware, & a black plate that the pots & switches mount to, which is screwed to the body. The paint on this thing is trashed, every 1/8 of an inch there is a crack in the paint, some gouges & chips, but the neck is perfect.
It's just a great instrument that served me well. It has been retired now for 20 years, but on occasion I will pull it out & it still puts a smile on my face.I have a Lefty 1981 G&L L-2000e, this was the first good bass I ever owned. I picked up an L-1505 about a year and a half ago for cheap expecting to flip it.

Made the mistake of wrapping my hands around the neck which resulted in me unloading my Jazz Bass.

I admit that I spent a year or so fighting with it to get it to sound like I wanted it to. A quick trip into a local G&L dealer confirmed that an L-2000 is what I wanted it to sound like.

I took delivery of a black Tribute L-2000 with a maple neck.

It sounds like I want it to, but it's not likely one I'll keep forever. It needs a fretjob and there are a few things I would much prefer to have which are available in a MIA G&L.

So, the L-1505 is going out the door once I get some time to document it right.

It's a great bass, but it doesn't do what I want it to.

Funny, the Tribute does what I want it to, but isn't what I consider a great bass. Not a slam against Tributes, but something of my own quirk.

Eventually we end up with something that speaks to us. Sometimes it does for just a short while, sometimes it's for the rest of our lives.

If you're sentimental and can afford to hang onto it, then do so. It'll be like being able to see an old friend now and again.

But if you have other aspirations then sell it off and let it speak to someone else for awhile.

My original L1K and I parted company several years ago. Great bass flexibility wise but I never really bonded with the big honkin' neck. Still, I did a bunch of dub with it and man - for that it killed. Kinda wish I'd a kept it - mostly so I could tease Duke with it.

Trans blue over Ash, maple neck. 1 small thumb rest mark over the pickup. 1 small ding at the lower of the neck joint where I chipped the finish taking the neck off to date the damned thing - doh! Early 80's lawsuit headstock. It went to the Bay Area via EBay in it's original Tolex case.
