TI & G&L Question

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey all,

I have a question about the TI Superalloys. I just received a set (0.045 - 0.125, "long scale") from juststrings.com & after borrowing some cutters from work, went to put them on my L2500. Much to my dismay, the strings are not long enough, either for through-body or bridge mounting. The B string was long enough to get two complete turns on the peg, though I prefer 3 full turns on each peg. The A string did not reach, so I did not even try it.

What should I do? Is there a way to use these strings? Must I sacrifice my 3 wraps per peg rule? Bridge-mounting? Should I try to return them (I did wrap the B string around the peg, and there is a slight kink in same due to the through-body bend)? Will they fit on my Pedulla thunderbass (it has smaller pegs - gotoh - & is not through-body).

If I cannot return them, any advice? I am willing to sell them at a loss, however, not TOO much of a loss (MODS: not trying to post a for sale ad here!!!!!).

Thanks for the help!
Best,

I don't think JustStrings does returns and especially since you've already "used" one of the strings. You may be able to sell them to someone.

I say try out the strings first and if you don't like them just sell them on TB. I only do two wraps and never heard of a three wrap rule. Actually I mainly do two wraps because I heard of a two wrap rule. Go fig.

Did you get the 344 (the 34 inch scale) size? I have superalloys on my L-2500 bridge mounted and they fit fine. They definitely were not long enough for thru-body mounting, but there were no problems with the strings. I'll attach a shot of my headstock -- you can see where the silks hit.

FWIW, I love these strings on the L-2500...that's what convinced me to use them on my BABP L-2000 Limited edition.

I agree that you need enough winding to get a stable bite on the peg...too little and you'll constantly be dealing with slippage. I generally only cut the very minimum off my strings -- I'll wrap a couple extra turns rather than clip too much off a string.

As far as selling them as used goes, people regularly sell strings that don't work out, but since they've been clipped, they may not fit any bass.

hth.

I didn't clip any strings, so hopefully that won't hurt the potential to sell too badly. These are the ones I bought:
TI345.

My 3 wrap rule mainly comes from a desire to have the same number of turns per peg, so it looks uniform. When I cut the string, I make the cut 6" from the post (each post). This ends up making about 3 wraps on each string. It is more from convenience than anything else - I have a 6" machinists ruler which comes in handy for measuring things that are 6". Here is a picture of my headstock (with DR strings on there - I forget whether they are Lo Rider nickels or High Beams - I think the nickels...)

Oops. my bad -- I said 344. That should be the correct set for your bass.

Hey guys, thanks for all the help & experience. I will give them another chance then. I will provide a full update on Monday.

P.S. I also just received a 35mm negative scanner & was having some issues with it - my frustration was already too high when I tried to change the strings! On the other hand, if I can get it to work, there will be some new pictures of basses to be shown!

Final update of G&L with TIs

Hey all,

I wanted to provide some feedback on this topic of G&L bass with TI strings. I strung my bass on Friday evening, and had a couple of great practice sessions on Saturday & Sunday. I was not able to get the same number of wraps per string, but it didnt seem to be too bad. Number of wraps (all strings unclipped except for removal of 1" from G string) B: 3, E: 2, A: 1, D: 2, G: 3. The tone was really smooth - I kept the bass in passive mode & turned down the treble, as it was a bit too much with the preamp on & treble at 100%. I did not find the slap tone as brilliant as the DR Lo-riders that I had on there. They are definitely decent strings, although the inability to get an evn number of wraps bothered me a bit.

I was practicing last night, doing some popping & snapped the G string. So that's that, $45 strings down the drain. The tone was great, though. I felt like a real horse's A$$ for breaking the string. Conclusion: I think I will stay with DR Lo-riders - they seem to fit me & my playing style best & haven't had an issue yet (knocking on wood).

Thank you all very much for your input!

Best,

imp

That's weird.

1. I string my T L2.5 through the body, E through C using the 344 plus a .030 for the C - I really don't care about the number of wraps as long as there are 2 or more - I would probably trim more off if there were say 5 though ... all I want is that there is a proper break angle at the nut and no slippage.

2. TI has fantastic customer service. Get a hold of your dealer and explain. They can probably get you a replacement or barring that sell you a single. If your dealer is a problem on selling you a single try this guy. Tom Appel at http://www.bassguitarstrings.us

I bought two set's of SA's a couple of years ago, the wraps on the E strings were just a shade long so I had to trim the wrapping back a little to clear the nut. TI replaced both the E's gratis ...

SA's are brite for the first couple of days - then they settle in to a nice round woulnd tone where they will stay for a long, long time.

BTW - where did the G pop ? You could have a burr somewhere ...

Are the DR strings able to go through the body in your L2500?
I sent my bass to adjust and the guy didn't put the High Beam through the body. I wonder whether they're not long enough or it's the guy's fault.

Yes, DR's go through the body, and there is enough room to cut each string length to 6" past each peg.

3 wraps is a bit excessive IMO. More wraps doesn't mean it'll tune better. In fact, it can work against you because it leaves more room around the peg for the strings to play. 2 wraps is plenty, which on these larger pegs is about 3-4 inches beyond the post.
