Trib L-2500 Treble Boost/Cut Issue

Sign in to disble this ad
My Trib L-2500 seemed to have bad pots - very scratchy- when I got it off eBay. So I ordered the factory Trib POTs from G&L and put them in exactly as they were wired originally. They are much better but still a little scratchy it seems. I now have two issues with the electronics. 1.) the Treble boost and cut POT seems to have little effect - it only seems to cut a small amount of high end but nothing like my older L-2500 Trib did as I recall. The other issue is that the Preamp three position switch seems to have no effect in the "boost" position. I'm wondering if I have a preamp problem? Any ideas and where can I find a good replacement pre-amp? Thanks

First off, the tone controls are passive. That means they're cut only; no boost.

I can only assume that you purchased the correct parts. The listing on the G&L Store is here.

Did you replace the old pots with the correct value new ones? 250K replaced with 250K, etc. It's an easy error to make and is worth checking. I don't have a Tribute schematic or diagram to work with, but experience (and the USA circuit) tells me that the 1Meg will be the bass control, the 250K pots will be the treble and volume controls.

As to the new pots being scratchy right out of the box, that's obviously not right and you should contact G&L for replacements. You could also get a can of Deoxit from a good electronics shop and give each pot a cleaning (do this out of the bass).

As to the switching not working correctly "post-repair", double check your work to verify that the new pots are installed in the correct locations. While you're in there carefully digging around, look for loose wires and poor connections. If this doesn't improve things, contact a G&L dealer for help in getting the bass repaired.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Ken. Yes I double checked all the work and did put in the correct pots - 250K vol and Treb and 1M Bass. I should have mentioned that I had this same problem with the original pots only with a lot of extra scratchy noise. any advice on a replacement preamp? Thanks!

Okay, that's settled.

Audere gets great reviews. 4mal has one in his Tribute L-2500 and loves it. I'll probably head that way as well with my USA L-2500.

Aguilar OBPs are also good products that have a great reputation.
