Tribute sb-2 necks

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey guys. I'm new to the G&L world. I just picked up a tribute SB-2 a week or so ago. Love the clear, powerfull pickups. It sounds so much fuller than my fender P even though it has SD qp's in it. The only thing I'm not super fond of is the neck. It has the jazz bass neck and I've heard that G&L makes a couple of different neck profiles. Is that true and if so do they fit the tribute. What neck would be more like a P neck? Are these avaliable from G&L or do I have to find somebody to trade with?
Thanks for the info guys.

The Tributes are only available with one neck style and the USA necks are different. Here's how it works:

Tributes - One neck style per bass model. Period.

USA - Four necks are available, not counting 5 string basses.

USA necks probably won't fit your Tribute with a modification someplace.

G&L will not sell a bare neck under any circumstances.

Bottom line: Glad you like the tone and sorry the neck isn't quite what you're after. It's yours now, so I guess you could kinda let it grow on you. I mean, it worked for Jim. He used to HATE the #8 necks, but loves 'em now.

The Tribute SB-2s have 4-bolt necks, so you can't replace those necks with ones from American-made G&Ls (6-bolt now, 3-bolt up until 2-3 years on certain models).

The Tribute L-2000 does have a wider neck, but this is 6-bolt as well. So you could swap necks between American- and Asian-made L-2000s, but not between the Tribute SB-2 and other G&L basses.

I would really recommend trying out the current neck on your SB-2 - it's by far the favourite neck profile amongst G&L lovers, and there must be a reason for it.

While I haven't compared widths and depths of USA & Trib, there's nothing stopping you from drilling new holes into the neck to mount it; *if* you find one that fits.

The Tribby necks are generally thinner than the USA SB-2 and JB-2s.

The USA tend to have more beef to them front to back and while narrow do not feel skinny. The Tribbys are thinner and feel skinny. Think along the lines of the Geddy Lee Jazz.

However I recently got a Honeyburst older USA 2K with a #8 neck that was Tribby like.

My SB-2, BABE, and JB-2 have much beefier yet narrow necks. I prefer those but can use any of them.

My main preference is the old 1 11/16 that was in between the current widths. My El Toro has my favorite neck dimensions.

The big question isn't "what do they feel like/what profile are they," but "is the neck pocket the same."

I dunno...

I'm in the same boat... Have a Tribute SB2 and a USA L2K w/ the #5 neck. I really prefer the #5, to the point where I'm considering a swap...

I had A Geddy and the Tribby neck is very similar if you ask me.

I have a 1993 L2K and I measured 1 5/8" at the nut and I think it is the 12" radius. Besides the little extra width, do the 1 3/4 necks feel much different? I would say the profile on mine is wide, but somewhat flat front to back. I'm wondering why G&L went to 1 3/4" instead of a P bass-like 1 5/8"

As one who likes thinner necks, I was concerned about my Tribute L2000 neck. It is somewhat thinner front to back than expected and is actually very comfortable to play all night, even with my small hands. My Tribby SB-2 is nigh on perfect for me.
