You can pop the neck off. It should be stamped in the pocket and on the heel. Or you can send it to me, and I might send it back.

Post a picture because little things can predict the era. Bridge finish, pole pieces, control plate etc.

Sometimes the bridge ground wire sinks into the wood/gets corroded. You can pull the bridge, clean the wire, move it to a new locale, including wrapping it around one of the mounting screws.

This is also real helpful if the bridge wire doesn't help:

The L1K has 3 positions on the switch humbucking/single coil/single coil w/ bass boost.

Only the humbucking will not have single coil hum. However if all 3 have a buzz, if putting your hand on metal reduces it then it is most likely a grounding issue.

Again...

The ONLY way to get a reasonably accurate idea of the date of manufacture on G&L instruments is to pull the neck and make a note of the neck and/or body date(s). Either or both may exist.

Research based on a serial number search at the GuitarsByLeo Registry might be as accurate as the neck/body dates. It might also be months off.

Many of the guys can get within a few months based on feature set or physical attributes, but the neck/body dates are really as good as it's going to get.

Why:

In the old days when serial numbers were stamped on bridges or neck plates, these items were just pulled out of a bin and installed on the instrument. No effort was made to use them sequentially.

When serial numbers started getting applied to headstocks, no effort was made to use the decals sequentially. Again. And still.

Part of the problem here is that neither G&L or BBE/G&L have ever released production logs or created a user-accessible database.

So again; the only way you're going to get a close production date is to pull the neck.

Ken...

Late 1998, early 1999. Like Ken said, the only way to know for sure is to pop the neck and check for neck and body dates.
