Vintage G&L SB2 Repair Help

Sign in to disble this ad
Hello fellow G&L enthusiasts. This is my first post on TalkBass. I have a vintage G&L SB2 which I purchased new in 1984. This version of the SB2 was only manufactured for a couple of years, and has 2 single coil pick ups, instead if the single, and the humbucker that were used in later production of the SB2. This instrument has been my primary bass since I purchased it in 1984, and is (was) a great bass. About 8 months ago the neck started going 'nuts'. I was constantly having to adjust the truss rod, sometimes 2 - 3 times a night during a gig. Three repairmen have told me the neck is twisted around the 6th fret, and that there is really nothing that can be done to fix it, except for replacing the neck. Does this sound right to you guys, and if so, where can I get a genuine G&L neck? I searched G&L's website (Guitars by Leo) and the only parts they offer are small plastic and metal parts, no necks, bodies or large parts. Thanks for your help...........Mark

Sounds like you put a lot of miles on it over the years.

Are there any large areas where the finish is worn off the neck, down to bare wood?

As for G&L building a new neck, you may want to call their repair dept for deets.

I talked to them about a new neck for my 2K after UPS cracked the headstock for me. They quoted me a price for a neck with custom options. They will want the entire bass sent to them, and you can expect to wait a few weeks.

Yes, it has had quite a few notes flow through it over the many years. There are no bare spots on the back of the neck, there are a few bald spots on the fretboard though. I hate to give it up, but it's becoming more and more difficult to play in it's current condition. I'll call G&L and see what they have to say. Thank you for your advise...........Mark
