Vintage SB-1?

I've always heard how impressive the split coil MFD pickups are on the mid 80's SB-1 are and I'm considering getting one. I have a MIJ P-Bass which I love. Can I get the same effect by sticking an MFD split coil in it?
Has anybody done this? Do the new MFD split coils, like in the SB-2 have a dark vintage sound?
