What that Buzz

Sign in to disble this ad
As I was reading through some of the threads regarding hum, or buzz problem with L2500, I noticed more than once that there is no hum (buzz) in passive mode but not with active mode. I thought that usually it is the other way around, active=no hum. My recent acquisition of L2500 is like this: no buzz (towards neck), some buzz (middle), lots of buzz (towards bottom). So, is this mean that position towards the neck is in passive mode? The diagram in the sticky just says forward = preamp ON with treble boost.

I don't neccesarily think there is more buzz, just that it is more audible in active- passive= high impedance= some loss of high end, which is where the buzz is most audible. Active= low impedance= extended frequency response + larger overall volume output, so you hear more of the buzz. Sounds to me like someone turned your switch around, as I've never heard of a G&L with a noise-cancelling preamp! Active should be noticeably louder than passive if you're having trouble figuring it out (and also have more high end and low end to boot).

Thanks,

The noise I'm hearing is more of a high frequency hissing than buzzing. And it is louder with more treble and bass response. Man, I thought that the wiring was crossed

Hissing could be a different problem- are you near a computer or flourescent lights when you hear it? My L2000 is only really "hissy" when I'm playing it next to my computer or in my old basement (which had flourescent lights).

Actually, neither. I think it will not be an issue during normal playing with other instrumnent but when I'm practicing, it is noticeable if I select Preamp on with treble boost. But not too bad with just preamp on. However, with passive mode. it is dead silent.

Thanks
