what do the switches do on a 1992 l2000?

i have been checking out a 92 (i think; serial # B02xxxx) and are the switches laid out the same as current l2000's?

Yep. The only different ones are the L2KE and even then the instructions are the same just Series is somewhat different.

the middle position on the rear switch is out so that would be the preamp w/o boost.
