G&L Bass ForumAddicts of Leo Fender's latest basses welcome here, as well as those interested in what drives the addiction to the basses from Fender Avenue.
I bought a L1000 from a guy on craigslist yesterday for $750. I am wondering if that was a reasonable price. Ultimately, the real question is was it worth $750 to me, but still I'm curious what really worth. I tried to search around on EBay and CL to get a sense, but I can't get a handle on what these things go for because there are not a lot of them around and I didn't find any like mine. The guy advertised it for $900 but came down on the price when we negotiated.
The finish is pretty beat up, but the neck's in good shape. Not much wear on the frets. I think the guy's mainly a guitarist. I'm glad it's got some marks though because then I don't have to be dismayed every time I bump it against something, which I tend to do even though I try not to.
Of the three pots the middle one (treble I guess?) doesn't do anything. I'll need to get that fixed. There's a far too intense hum in two of the three positions of the switch. Sounds great when the switch is all the way towards the bridge though. I got a hard case with it.
Looks like an '80 or '81 rendition. The back 2 knobs are unoriginal and God knows what may have been done under the hood.
Good news is the L1K is a simple circuit and any electronic tech worth their salt can look a the schematic and wiring diagram to set it back to normal if it is jacked up.
Price was fair. 2 positions of the switch are going to have single coil hum. On the switch there is, or should be, a capacitor. Remove it and you will only have hum in the center position.
For me, the 2 "noisy" settings on the L1000 were my favorites (only had one for a short time). Put some new strings on there, fix the treble cut pot, and then cut the treble about 50%- should be bright enough with the new strings and the 50% treble cut will eliminate a fair amount of the buzz (I was never bothered by the buzz with those settings).
That's a beautiful bass. There are 2 around here for a grand but one has a questionable neck (feels odd when played) and the other weighs as much as my P (11 pounds).

I saw that yesterday, and thought long and hard about pulling the trigger on it....... It sat at about 190 bucks for days. I knew it wouldn't stay that low though. I think 750 is a pretty good price for it though.
But man, I've got this real big problem..... I've got an '87 SB1 that I just can't seem to put down. My MIA Jazz and newly acquired L2000 are just sitting in their cases unplayed. I bought the SB1 brand new in '87, and it's not only got mojo.... but it's my mojo! And now that I've strung it up with TI Jazz Flats, it's the sweetest sounding and sweetest playing bass that I have! Major finger funk happening.
Congrats, and Good Luck with your new bass! I hope you have as much fun with it as I do my SB1!
