Would a MM pup in the "p" position emulate an L-1000 sound?

Does anyone know if putting a passive MM-style pickup in the "P" position would come close to an L-1000 sound?

Thanks,

Why don't you use a G&L MFD pickup, the sell them from their online store.

Hi. I only see the 5 string model in their online store.

Also, I'd like to be able to switch to other similarly-sized pickups if I don't like the one that I bought, etc. Maybe it sounds like I'm defeating the purpose.....but I'm more interested in the large-slug polepiece design and the location of that pickup style.

For example, I'd be using a standard Fender style bridge, etc., not a G&L bridge.

My overall objective is to stay away from proprietary parts.

Regards,

This is kind of the reverse of the usual question. It's strangely refreshing.

No. It'll sound like a MM pickup in the "P" position.

It takes an MFD to sound like an MFD equipped bass. You can call to see if the 4 string pickup is available.

You might get close with Basslines ceramic.

Hi. Thanks for the response. I ended up finding the 4 string model via another search....it appeared on its own page, for some reason....(on the G&L site)...and not on the page with all the other pups.

Thanks again!

IMHO, your tone would be far better served by using a non-Fender bridge. Leo Quan, Hipshot, Schaller, etc. will allow the bass to speak much clearer than the Fender stamped-style.

Thanks.

I should have actually said "non G&L bridge" since I didn't necessarily mean "only standard stamped metal Fender". My objective here is, if unhappy with the result, to use something which can be swapped out for a replacement easily because no mods would be needed vis a vis # of screw holes, etc. I should have been more clear.

Either way, my focus right now is on the pickup(s).

Thanks,
LouLoomis

The wunkay magic is due to the MFD pickup, placement, controls, and the switching scheme.

Anything less isn't gonna be close.

who modded that shortscale fender by adding an MFD? it was a sweet little black bass. i forget the details. i wonder if that experiment would have any relevance here.

ps. i know how scale length affects tone.

I've modded a Fender P-lite for a diminutive girlfriend to play, putting custom knobs, straplocks and a Basslines Quarter Pounder in it. Lil' gal, lil' bass, BIG ballsy sound.
