Truss rod is maxed out

I recently received a 85 G&L L-1000. The neck had just a bit too much relief so I tried tightening the trussrod 1/8 turn last night and the wrench sprang back to starting position . Then this morning I pulled the neck and found a shim inside the neck pocket. This is a 3-bolt micro-tilt system so why the shim? This shim appears to be original Is this normal for older G&Ls? .

I removed the bullet nut and found a lot of gunk in and around the shaft. The nut and rod threads appear good after some cleaning. I going to add a little dab of petroleum jelly to the inside threads of the bullet then ease it back on the rod being careful not to get any jelly on the wood. Has any G&L owners have the same experience and how did it workout for you. Right now any input would be appreciated.

Though i have never actually seen it, I think sometimes people use shims with the microtilt because the microtilt alone reduces contact between the neck and body. The shim just fills in the space. Personally I don't see much need for it but it can't hurt anything.

Thanks metron, it felt good to read your opinion. I pulled it.
The shim does raise the heel a bit and it is as thick as a credit card. I believe this is the reason I get buzzing below the 17th fret as the bridge adjustments do not help at all. This shimming does not appear to be an amateur made shim, he/she has some skill. I hope my neck will take an adjustment. I got the ill feel'n the truss rod is maxed out.

Some folks are afraid of the micro tilt and assume it's the same weak affair Fender put out in the 70's (it isn't), and as a result of their unfounded fears they choose to use a shim. As long as your micro tilt works (screw threads and such) I'd personally just use it. If you are more comfortable with a shim, use it.

If the truss rod is maxed out you might want to try slipping a washer or two over the truss rod to give you a little more adjustment for the nut.

Yup the washer solution for maxed truss rod nut is pretty well known. The challenge may be in finding one that will fit.
