How do you generally maintain your G&L guitar? (I think the tribby should be similar) The strings? Fret? Neck? Hardware?
More importantly, what do you do with the body finish?
For me, there are some scratches on the body due to daily use, any good idea to fix this?
I am looking at Dunlop 65 (6582 for String and hardware, 6554 Lemon Oil for fret board, 654 for the body finish). I am wondering if 6574 - carnauba wax is necessary... It is said that it can fix tiny cracks/scratches.
Any comment is very welcomed.
Thanks in advance. |
Compressed air to blow dust out of the cracks is about all I ever do on mine. I havn't tried any oil on my fingerboards, tho, which I've heard Michael Tobias and others recommend. So that'd be the only maintenance item I havn't followed (and I probably should).
For the fingerboards, I just use flatwounds to keep the wear down. It's a slight compromise in tone, but at the same time I'm not rich enough to tear it up/redo it every few years either. Flats are also easier on fretted basses too.
As far as the finish, I try NOT to wipe it down all the time. In fact, the more scrubbing you do, the duller you're going to make the finish. I only take a cloth to it when it's too dirty and I leave it heck alone in between.
Scratches in the finish I NEVER try to repair. Anything short of refinishing it is only going to make it worse. Again, the more you wipe, clean and scrub, the more of the finish you're going to take off. Try to think of the little dings and scratches as "relic"-ing,

, and don't worry about it.
My L2000 is 10 years old and, apart from the little bits of "relicing" that have happened to it over the years, the finish is still shiny like it was when I bought it new.
