The oldest "good" bass amp from what I understand... Built from '58-'60 with only around 600 units built. I get that it's vintage and all, but what in the world are you going to do with a relic that isn't really useable??

This is the type of thing a collector, or representative of a collection purchases.

Yeah, a collector of things that have been sitting in water. I guess I don't know vintage amps, but I'd like to know what other things are "a 9 out of 10" in his book.

Edit: My mistake, that's not water, it's "mojo juice" that seeped up into it from the stage. And if it didn't have a cigarette burn, it'd only be a "7."

What it's worth is what someone is willing to pay.
A real collector will value that it's all original. No replacements parts.
There could be some clean up though that could help it, like some restorer method to clean the water discoloration. Only restoration experts, or somebody willing to pay the price would know.

And, even though it's called a Bassman, it's a guitar amp. No amp is worth that much to me, but then, I'm a player, not a collector.

I agree that it has been sitting in water. That's why the bottom two drivers have been replaced. In my mind, not even worth a grand.

They got the decimal point off by a couple places.

I don't think the drivers were replaced, looks like the magnet covers were removed from the factory to allow the amp chassis to squeeze in behind them. Still, not worth it to me......... unless it came with a Fender bass from the same era.

Well, I wouldn't play bass thru it. They make great guitar amps though. Pretty sure the original Marshalls are based on that circuit.

They don't make 'em like that anymore
 

For a reason

I can get a brand-new amp for less than that.

They're highly prized as 6 string guitar amps, but not particularly for bass.

Its an open back amp among other short comings for bass.

i have a mid 70s bassman 10 and it sounds amazing with the bass through it.

the 4x10 combo sounds very tight.. gets pretty loud too

COMPLETELY different beast.

Look at what guitards are willing to pay for Dumble and Trainwreck amps... Makes this look cheap.

I could swear that the same amp has been up for sale on the 'Bay in the past, possibly with the same pics.

Those old tweeds do make hellacious guitar amps. Guitarist in one of my bands has an original 54 Tweed Deluxe, which sounds killer.

But this particular example is WAY too expensive. You could HIRE someone to build you a BRAND NEW exact replica of these amps for probably less than 1/4 of that. And you wouldn't have to worry about gigging it and the parts should last 60 years.

Oh, or you could just buy a brand new one for whatever it is they cost these days (under 2k, surely).

One of my guitard coworkers sent me the link to this auction yesterday. I was actually surprised to see it end at $4,050 with the reserve not met.

It has been on ebay several times. The price is $1000 less than the last time I saw it.
