I picked up a 1971 Ampeg SVT Blueline two days ago for $600!
I saw the thread here in talkbass about the amp being posted on cl. I also saw that it was in the Bay Area craigslist. Without any hesitation, I email the guy. Blah blah blah. Didn't think I had a chance to get my hands on it and two hours later I get a call from the guy saying that he would be able to meet the next day.
I pull up to the studio and lets say its not the safest of neighborhoods.. ha. Anyways, I brought my cab (410 HLF) and bass ('08 Fender Precision) with me and headed into the studio. I have never seen a vintage Ampeg head before... Even with all the ranting and raving here on talkbass. I just had to see it!! So I plugged it in!
I notice right away there is major hum microphonic issues. I play around for a bit. Talked to the guy about tubes and whatnot... I end up buying it. I couldn't turn it down at that price!
I bring it back to my place where I am on Operation Clean-up! This thing has not been cleaned in who knows how long. Also, every power tube and a couple driver tubes are not fully in their sockets. I replace the v1 tube in the driver section with a JJ 12AUX7 because it wasn't glowing like the rest and I figured it could have attributed to the awful noises I was hearing. Three hours of straight cleaning with a couple lbs of compressed nitrogen, 5 rags, 24 q-tips, I am DONE!
I then plug the SVT in and... no hum and no noise! It sounds amazing! There are still a couple things I need to replace like some shockmount feet and new knobs.
I am super stoked with the outcome and I thought I would share with everyone. Here are some pics!
Sorry I don't know how to upload. Here is the link! http://picasaweb.google.com/kranahan/1971SVT#
