Ok, Ive never really thought about this, but since im in the market for a cab, and ive found tons of awesome deals on craigslist for 4x12 cabinets, and absolutely no bass cabs.
My question is that for bass, is there really that much of a difference between a good 4x12 and a good 4x10?

it really depends on the brand and also what type of sound you are after.
i'm quite happily with my 2x 2x10 = 4x10 set up and i get enough low end out of it.
4x10's seem to be a popular choice on talkbass

I've been playing an Eden cab with 2 12" speakers. I also use Edens with 2 10"s (2 different models) and Edens with only 1 12" speaker. They all have their place in my bag of tricks and I do use them all depending on venue.
I would think a 4 12" cab would rock....but so do cabs with 10"s. I loved my Ampegs with 10"s. The Edens are good too.
Best,
Dave

Best,
Dave | Yes, it does depend on the design and the speakers, not just speaker size. There are plenty of 10's out there that can provide the low end that a 12 or a single 15 can give. I own an Avatar 212 and it's got some great low end. I also own a Tube Works 410 and it's every bit as growly and low as the 212, yet with a little more punch from the 10's.
Get to a music store and try out some cabs and hear what you really want to hear. We can tell you anything but it won't mean a thing until you hear it for yourself.
