Ok, Ive never really thought about this, but since im in the market for a cab, and ive found tons of awesome deals on craigslist for 4x12 cabinets, and absolutely no bass cabs.

My question is that for bass, is there really that much of a difference between a good 4x12 and a good 4x10?

i guess the 4x12 will have slightly more low end and the 4x10 slightly more clarity in the highs.
it really depends on the brand and also what type of sound you are after.
i'm quite happily with my 2x 2x10 = 4x10 set up and i get enough low end out of it.

4x10's seem to be a popular choice on talkbass

A 4x12 guitar cab isn't the same as a 4x12 bass cab.

Really? Really? Please Stop guessing, and let someone give out some actual facts.

I don't have any cabs with 12" only 10". I almost bought a Genz-Benz 212 cab ( maybe (2) of them) but the price is too high.

There are very, very few 4x12 bass cabs, but dozens of guitar cabs.

12" and 10"

I think it depends on the design of the cabinet as well as the speaker(s) size. I've been playing an Eden cab with 2 12" speakers. I also use Edens with 2 10"s (2 different models) and Edens with only 1 12" speaker. They all have their place in my bag of tricks and I do use them all depending on venue.
I would think a 4 12" cab would rock....but so do cabs with 10"s. I loved my Ampegs with 10"s. The Edens are good too.

Best,

Dave

Yes, it does depend on the design and the speakers, not just speaker size. There are plenty of 10's out there that can provide the low end that a 12 or a single 15 can give. I own an Avatar 212 and it's got some great low end. I also own a Tube Works 410 and it's every bit as growly and low as the 212, yet with a little more punch from the 10's.

Get to a music store and try out some cabs and hear what you really want to hear. We can tell you anything but it won't mean a thing until you hear it for yourself.
