10 Classic (Guitar) Amps

Sign in to disble this ad
Interesting article from the My Rare Guitars site....it includes the Fender Bassman and the 50W Marshall bass amp. Yeah, it's guitar-focused, but two bass amps get into the list...and it's a fun article.

10 Classic Guitar Amps & The Songs That Made Them Famous | MyRareGuitars.com | MyRareGuitars.com

And for those who don't know who Dick Dale is, you can benefit by checking this article, reading the #10 listing and hitting the video clip.

Fun stuff!

All Fender and Marshall with just a little bit of lip service paid to Vox and Supro (Edge made the Vox AC-30 popular? Hmmm...all this time I thought it was the Beatles). But where is the VT-22? I guess nobody remembers a little band called the Rolling Stones.

That's a cool read. Yeah Jimmy, the "Edge" (I'm sure his mama named him that) wasn't any groundbreaker of the Vox sound. All the voodoo around Page and Van Halen's brown sound is pretty cool. I'm a big fan of the Gemini II as far as Ampeg guitar amps go.

Not a bad list, obviously there are plenty of omissions. Amp number 10 can't be a 1965 Blonde Showman (see picture caption). Fender stopped making the blonde tolex showman in 1963 and switched to blackface. 1960-1963 "Blonde" Showman

Very cool article!
I do like the way they referred to the bizarre mods done to EVH's Marshalls then still found room to say that 95% of his tone is in his fingers!

Hmmmm......I've always thought Fender's best combo amp of the 60s was either the Twin or the Super. It was the Super for me, thought the Twin was too jangley for my tastes. The tone out of those 4x10s still makes me feel good.

The Edge made the Vox famous, well I suppose if you were born in the late 70s or 80s he did.

Looks like just another "best of" list by some Rolling Stone wanna be writer.

While the Dumbles a cool addition, I think they are a bit esoteric to be on a ten best of all time list. I would add one of the early "garage era" Boogies like Santana played to that list. In fact I think Carlton played a Boogie or a Randall Smith modified Princeton on all those Steely Dan Records in the 70's.

VOX was the UKs Fender. I grew up with VOX the same way as folk in the US grew up with Fender. Saying that VOX became popular because of U2 is asinine! They were everywhere even before the Beatles became kind of well known. This was before the days of Marshall, Sound City, Orange, Hiwatt et al.

Marshall JCM800 very much defined metal and glam metal, I might think JCM900 grunge and alt but oh well.

In N.America Vox were crappy SS amps made by some other company. I remember playing one thinking it was going to sound like Queen.....no dice it was crap..

And what about the 4X10 Bassman Probably the most important amp in rock n roll

Thanks for posting this, I've always liked the marshall jtm 45. There is just something about the sound of them that I find irresistible.

When I think Vox, I think Brian May.

Been re-listening to a lot of Queen recently!

It's interesting that some bass amps from the 60's have been put into widespread service as guitar amps - the blackface Bassman is probably the best example.

I would include Tom Morello from RATMs JCM800 + Peavey 4x12 as a classic 90's Alt-music guitar rig.
