1001rbII Lit on fire

Sign in to disble this ad
Funny story. I went to guitar center today to try out some 5 string's. I grab an instrument cable and plug it into the bass. Find a speakon cable plug it into an ampeg 8x10 push the 5 string bass button plug the bass in and turn on the amp... nothing I then turn off the 1001rb unplug the speakon cable and find another plug it in just as before. Turn on the amp and I hear the bass going through the 8x10 sweet sit down grab the bass get ready to jam out I go to set the knobs and notice through the grill of the 1001rbII there is a fire inside. I blew out the fire unplugged everything from the head EVERYTHING and quickly play out of a combo amp. A sale's rep walks up to me. "you smell that" me: "smell what?" "I think a tube must have blew or something it smells like smoke" Me:"Dude I have no idea I don't smell anything I've just been playing out of this combo amp no problems"

A friend recently bought the same amp and had something similar happen. SUpposedly he plugged it into an avatar 4x10neo and used the gk proprietary cable (4pin) and hooked it up to the avatar..........apparently right after firing it up........it caught on fire. Luckily he explained the whole thing to our local GC and they exchanged it.......

Your situation........tell the guitar center what you did. Always ask before plugging in stuff because you never know if you are using the proper cables and risk damaging the amp........which apparently you did.........accident or not

Just my input!

I did the same thing to a friend's GK that I was borrowing at the time. I think I sent it a 2 ohm load. It cost me a pretty penny at the time to take care of it! I subsequently learned about matching ohms.

You know what's awesome? Having knowledge of a potentially dangerous situation and lying about it so that there is a good chance that someone else will get hurt by it.

Seriously, dude, it doesn't sound like it was your fault (unless you hooked up the equipment wrong) so you probably didn't have anything to worry about by being honest. I know this is talkbass.com and not talkmorals.com, but that was really low, really immature, and really stupid. Call them back and tell them what happened.

Well, if that's what happened, he may be held liable, that doesn't negate his own responsibility to be honest and forthright about the situation. The OP needs to grow a pair and take responsibility.

Not sure why this would ever be an issue... I used a GK cable with an Ampeg 810 for about a year and a half with zero issues. May have even used it with some other cabs as well.

I'll be the odd man out and say if that was me, I would have been dying laughing but would have told the salesman what happened if he asked. Nothing beats seeing a faceless corporation failing...

Thinking about it, you're right. The GK Speakon is just a four-pin speakon, so the lows to go to pins 2 and 4, and highs go to 1 and 3. Plugging that into a non-GK cab would just leave an open load on the high range amp, which wouldn't damage anything.

Speakons do not use your numbering scheme. Lows go to +1 and -1, highs to +2 and -2.

OP you should have said what you did. Not doing so was childish!

Yeah, I couldn't remember the specific numbering setup, but my point was simply that there was nothing that would have damaged the amp by plugging a four-pin speakon from the GK to the SVT810.
