112 or 210?

Sign in to disble this ad
OK, I'm putting together a mini rig for use in church and with singer/songwriters. I won't need to get real loud... weight is an issue and expense too (if I can stay under about $350, I'll be happy).

For a head, I'll likely go with the GB 3.0, the Ibanez promethean, maybe even the Carvin BX500, or something in that price/power/features category...

so would you go with 112 or 210's? and given weight and price constraints, which one?

thanks.

personally i prefer the sound of 2 x 10 inch speakers than a single speaker. but it depends on the brand and model too.

I've used up to 4, 2x10s at a time. One 2x10 has never been adequate for my tonal goals. On the other hand one 1x12 is often outstanding with good watts. Past the one 1x12 then I need so much more than the 2x10. This is my experience, YMMV. I find that the tone and cut and fullness of a 1x12 works up until I need another 1x12 or then something way more than a 2x10. The exception could be those really large front ported Eden 2x10s that exceeded normal 2x10 behavior but where big enough that they should have.

A 2x10 would probably be more efficient than a 1x12 so I'd go that route.

I use a 1x12 for my small pop trio gigs and it's always been enough. . . plus it gives you the option of adding another one (not that you can't have 2 2x10's)

I dig the tone of a really good 1x12, but in your case the 2x10 might be more practical - especially if you're getting no help from the PA...

If you do get the Shuttle 3.0, get the 2x10 in 4 ohms, and play it standing on end - so it's taller than it is wide. Should work great for what you have in mind...

IMO and IME a 210 and a 112 working in conjunction sounds wonderful. If you had to settle on just one cab, though, I'd go with the 210 and then add the 112 later.

if you're thinking combos at all, you might consider the GK MB-210. It's light (33 pounds) and really brings the volume and the tone. Plus, you can add an external cab if/when needed.
I just got it, and used it last night for a jazz trio gig at a small club - it gave me all the power/presence I needed, and more. Plus, it's a "grab and go" deal, which really sold it for me.
