12" driver for sealed cab

Sign in to disble this ad
What parameter should I be looking at when selecting a driver for a sealed cab?

I’m thinking of building a sealed 212 for use with my SVT on smaller gigs. I have an Avatar 212, but the vented cab is a bit dark with the SVT. Shooting for “old school” tone, no tweeter, and doesn’t have to go ridiculously low. Thinking about the Eminence S2012.

Thanks!
-Bill

For a reasonable price, the Basslite S2012 is the one that models the best in a small sealed box for me.

It's as close to Bill's specs as you're gonna find in a modern neo.

My first thought was also the S2012.

Another possibilitiy is the Beta 12 A2. It doesn't have the big 2 kHz ballpark peak that the S2012 does, and therefore might have a more oldschool tone profile.

The S2012 is actually closer to vintage than the Beta. If you look at the Jensen P12N

you see the same peaked response in the mids (though the dip at 1.6kHz is pretty strange). One of the things that neo lets driver designers do is to get response closer to what those old Alnicos had.

Thanks Bill; isn't the Jensen a guitar speaker? I had figured the B102 was closer to what a "vintage" bass cab response curve looked like... the "vintage tone' was more of a guitar tone, then?

It is, but in the '60s they were used for bass as well. Dedicated bass speakers were rare until the '70s.

Thanks Guys,
I was leaning towards the S2012, but wasn't sure if it would be suitable in a sealed cab.
Thanks Again!!
