12" speaker

Sign in to disble this ad
i have an off brand hollinger 80 watt amp and 160 watt peak. The amp puts out pretty good power for a cheap combo. When i raise power up to get some good thump the speaker crackles and pop.It is not busted, but just a cheaply made speaker.I like the amp for the power i need right now, which is turning it up and really hearing what this thing can do in a band practice situation.I want to replace the speaker which is a 4 ohm to a 8 ohm and move to at least 100 watts which would be plenty in my case right now.Can i do this?

Short answer, no. The amp is what it is. The speaker otoh, *can* be replaced, but you'd need to model the cab after measuring, and find an appropriate replacement. It's not so easy for the untrained, (including myself). BUT- the problem is, no matter what you do, you'll always be limited by the single 12" driver- and no matter what it's rated for, it will only go so far before choking. You'd be better served with a larger speaker cab, no matter what amp you use.

Yeah. It's sad.

You can replace the speaker with a higher quality speaker. But the results will be hit or miss. If I were you, I would not spend the money on a better 12. But rather sell it as is and try to save for a better amp/ (combo, or otherwise) If you are determined to try and "save" the amp you have, then, if I were you, I would try an Eminence "Basslite" 12.

Be advised. This is not what I recommend. But is only a thought with my limited information concerning you amp.

posting pics or links would help.

I found a hollinger amp it looks like a sealed cabinet pratice amp.

most likely has a dirt cheap speaker in the 2.5 or lower 1.5mm xmax range
so a few lower cost Eminence speakers in the 4mm range would make him happy.

Basslite be ok , I think it a little to much cost wise for a 80 watt pratice amp.

average sealed pratice amp is going to be 1 to 1.8 cubic feet so its not rocket science, there can be at least 5 to 10 speakers that could work in a sealed cabinet.

A few Gammas or betas work well in sealed cabinets, I forget which ones, so give me a few to figure it out
the price range will be 60 to 80$

If your amp is rated for 80 W with a 4 ohm speaker, then it will put out only about half that into an 8 ohm speaker.

Plus like the other guys said, the speaker itself is only one part of why you're getting that crackling/popping sound. The box part that contains the speaker is just as much to blame, so that putting a better speaker in it may not solve your problem at all.
