Anybody want to discuss their 18" speaker equipped cabs?

I have a Peavey 1810 that I refer to as, "Spongebob".

I'll discuss it.

I use a stereo crossover to send all sub 140Hz frequencies to my 1x18 and I love it. It's especially nice in venues with poor subwoofer sounds because I can use my 18" for the whole room as I see fit for our music.

(The old head. I added a compressor to it and I'll be transferring it into a rolling 10U sometime next week)

Sweet rig!

Before I got the 1810 I was borrowing a friend's Yamaha 215 cab that was worlds better then the Crate BT1000- 112 combo that I'm using for our practice sessions. But, the 18" seems to be much more efficient with handling those 5th string notes then even the 215.

I love my 18" cab. I am using two SWR BigBen

At first, I only use them as sub in a bi-amp system, the other cab being a SWR Goliath 1. One gig, I had the wrong cable and can only use the BigBen, the amount of high-end it produce was a present surprise. Now, I use just the 2x 18" stacked a great deal more often.

Old rig

New rig

And here is another thread for 18" lovers, with lots of photos.

I'll just leave this as a regular 18" thread...

OOOH! I tried to find an 18" club to join and for some reason that one never came up! We can just scratch this club and leave it as a simple thread.

Stereo 18's

Have you ever used both stacks at the same event? I've thought about a second 1810 some day to run stereo effects.

I have a Mesa Boogie 118 in a Roadready cabinet, and it sounds as good today as it did 25 years ago. If I remember right, Boogie advertised it as being a full range 18. I also have a Guass 118 sub-woofer cabinet. Hook the two of them up to my Boogie D180 and it'll shake ground.

I use an Emperor 18 with a 4x12 and it sounds awesome. I like my 2x15 but the stack destroys it when I feel like haulin it around. Can't beat a good 18 in the mix

That Older Peavey Black Widow Speaker may not be blown!

Those of us that have Peavey cabs with the 18" BW. If your BW speaker starts to get noisy and/or muted sounding. This may be due to a known issue with the older BW speakers.

Peavey used a black foam plastic in the airspace at the center if the magnet assembly. That foam plastic tends to deteriorate and crumble in the 20 or so years since manufacture and the fragments can find their way into the voice coil gap and interfere with the movement of the VC. Mine got so bad during an outside gig that the cone became stuck in place. (after the coil cooled off).

I took the speaker out to see what happened. The magnet assembly comes off the spider on these by removing the 3 allen bolts and gently prying the magnet assembly off. I found that the voice coil dome was filled with black plastic flakes and some were melted onto the coil itself like tar.

I gently removed all the plastic(tar) gently working it loose with my fingernail. But, there was still lots of bits sticking to the VC gap which I scraped off. Then, I used some masking tape doubled up with the sticky side out to clean off all the debris and metal bits sticking the the VC gap. (learned about that trick from reconing sites)

Now the speaker works as good as new.
