1964 Fender Bassman

I am restoring a 1964 Bassman amp.
The head is done and sounds incredible.
Three things need to be done to the cab.
#1. Speakers need replacing (They are not original)
#2. The piggy back straps need replacing
#3. The grill cloth should be replaced to match the head.

The speaker cab is actually a 1968 cab that is loaded with 2 15's.

These speakers are toast and need to be replaced.
Speakers I am considering are:
Jensen MOD
Eminence Legend
Peavey Black Widows

What kind of speakers should I get?
What OHM rating should they be?

the delta 15a is the best speaker eminence makes for that application. the beta 15 would probably also work and be a little less expensive, but for those cabs, they're really the go-to new speaker. you could pay more for some vintage jbl k140's as well, but if you're wanting to get out of it relatively cheaply and still cop the right tone, delta or beta. and since bill is a speaker genius and recommends the delta, i'd go with it.

The output transformer on that model Bassman is a 125A13A which is rated at 4 ohms.

The cabinet should have two 8 ohms speakers wired in parallel.

Speakers were 12's and not 15's.

This is not a problem because it dates the cabinet earlier than I thought it was. It is a 1966/67 Cab with 12 inch speakers.

Any speakers you could reccommend?

I am looking at Eminence 12 inch speakers. What do you think?

The Delta 15A is the 8ohm version and the Delta 15B is the 16ohm version.
If your going to wire in parallel 2x8ohm =4ohm or 2x16ohm=8ohm

wire to match your output transformer, i believe the Blackface bassman only came with a single 4ohm output. You should confirm that.

Blackface Bassman

aa864 schematic

Delta 15B 16ohm

Delta 15A 8ohm

Selenium 15PWP-SLF

if you want to spend the cash for a lighter speaker than

Kappalite 3015

Otherwise to hold its collectors value hunt down a pair of JBL
D-140 or K-140 and recone. If i understand correctly there is no D-140 cones and it can be redone with a K-140 cone.
DO NOT use weber as a recone service, use original JBL parts

Non of those drivers above sound anything like the original JBL's
the JBL D-140 or later K-140 was the top of the line speaker in 1968.....otherwise it would have a Utah, Oxford or Rola speaker.

It could be the larger or smaller 67 ish cabinets.

the smaller 21 x32 x 11.5 cabinet is too small for modern bass speakers, and is better off as a guitar cabinet.

Not at all, it worked for bass in 1964 and it will work even better today with an appropriate modern driver, like the Alpha 12 that I recommended. It is, after all, only a 50 watt head.
