1971 Orange 8x10 wattage?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey guys!

I just recently bought an Orange 8x10 from 1971 off of eBay. I am re-doing my entire rig so I still have to buy a new head (most likey an SVT-3 and a sansamp). Only problem is that the seller doesn't know the power handling of it, and I've been looking everywhere for any info but its impossible to find. If anyone has any information on this beaut of a cab please let me know!

Thanks!

if you pop out a speaker it might say the wattage rating.

An SVT3 and a sans amp won't do it justice. Cool score though!

I second that emotion.

I also second that emotion. If you're going to buy a new head to go with the cab, I'd get something with a bit more vintage vibe to it. Now is your chance to go all tube.

Wattage ratings don't mean anything important anyway. If it sounds horrible, turn down the bass or the volume.

True, true... that's common sense, but I think see what the OP is after. If you're trying to really whack the speakers (get the most out of your amp and cab), then you want to know what the cab is rated at.

Ampeg flatbacks were rated @ 240W, then they went up to 300W later in the 70's. The two cabs sound different with the same head partly since the older drivers are being pushed harder.

I won't push my flatback with my SVT since I don't want to cook those nice old drivers. I use amps that are less than 200 watts.

This makes sense with the Orange: if it's only rated around 200 Watts, then you could push it with a Sunn 2000S or 100W Orange or 100W Hiwatt or something like that and be in hog heaven.

The basschat.co.uk lads might know what's up with this cab since they're so many more of them over there. It's worth a cross post IMO.

It's probably this cab:

http://cgi.ebay.com/1971-ORANGE-8X10...item3a608e70ae

I imagine that it's heavy as hell and sounds great

It is! I'll post pictures anyways!

Just to be safe is there any 120 watt rack bass heads I should look into? My band shares a 2 head roadcase and I have the 6 racks in the middle

A Mesa D-180 would be awesome with this cab.

LOL. I just recently sold both a DB359 and a D-180. Hilarious.

Are you looking for a clean or dirty(fuzz/OD) head? The D-180 gets dirty/fuzzy/grindy in a hurry... the DB359 stays clean as long as possible, and doesn't really give a pleasing tube distortion.

There are a bunch of 200W tube heads floating around these days... if you search here on TB there are tons of threads on the topic.

You need to decide if you want to go tube or ss, and then how much power you want... (what the cab can take).

I think some D-180s are going for around 450 (low) to 650 (high) these days.

There's the Mesa Buster, which is a little cleaner than the D-180... then there's always the Orange AD200B MKIII, the Peavey VB2, the Traynor YBA200... Ashdown JUST announced a 200W tube head coming soon a couple days ago...

I think a Sunn Coliseum (300W solid state) would also sound great with this cab.

Hell, a GK800RB would sound great... you really need to determine if you want to go tube or SS, clean or dirty, etc... lots of stuff out there.

I just looked at those eBay pics again...

it ALMOST looks like the badge on the back says 7.5 Ohms? (What the WHAT?)

That could be a bit of a boner killer...

You really need to get the cab, and get some pics of the drivers so you know exactly what you're dealing with before you spend your cash on a head for it.
