From 1973 to 2010...Retiring the Sunn

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey fellas. I have always been a "Bass head" into cab kind of player. Well I had been using a Sunn 190B that I got from a fellow talkbasser a few years ago. The amp served me very well and I love the tone. Used it on my band's album and went around the state with it.
The time has come however for the venerable Sunn 190B to retire to a posh and fluffy life of studio-only performance before anything happens to it.
I am slowly acquiring the parts to create a new rig. I decided to go with Carvin because of the affordability factor.
I want to try something new, so I bought a Carvin DCM2000L Power Amp.

I use a Sansamp Bass Driver Pedal, so am I correct in thinking that THAT is going to be my pre-amp?

The second question is as follows: In 2 weeks I am going to get a speaker cabinet. I have always used 2 1X15" cabs, so this time, I wanted to get a 4X10" cab.
Carvin has the BRX10.4NEO, and it is rated at 4ohms impedance.
The DCM2000L is minimum 2ohm per channel and 4 ohm "bridged". This is what the instruction booklet reads.

Question is: Will I be able to hook all of this together and get back to the bottom where I belong?

The power amp has an output in back that reads "bridge only". Is this the output I will be using from here out?

And there is a button for bridge in the back too...It seems like these power amps are made for PA systems?? Just a little confused, and if you all could point me to a tutorial, I will get out of your hair!

Thank you very much for your time

Sunn (now Carvin...)

Your Sansamp will work well as a preamp.

It sounds like you have the bridge mode thing figured out right. There are different procedures for various amps.

Power is power. That amp is designed to fit any application, you tailor it for your needs.

That's a lot of headroom, be careful with the volume.

Thank you for the reply, Plstrns, it really helps me out. This is a huge switch for me and a lot of what I am doing with my rig update is the result of lurking in TB posts about amps and sound etc. I really want to get that bass sound of professional fusion/jazz/progressive bassists, and so I thought that the way to go would be to use this type of gear. I want to apply it to rock/indie music. I play more of a "lead" style bass with more effects etc, so I want as transparent of an amp as possible.

The Sansamp doesn't do transparent IMO. At least what I would deem so. The 2KW that the amp puts out at 4Ω is something you're going to have to be careful with. Your cabinets are going to have to handle a lot of power. Consider that when you purchase.

Thanks for the heads-up on the cabinets Paul. Are there any suggestions for cabs that you can give me. I was considering Carvin Cabs, and the dude at Carvin mentioned that they would be able to handle the power amp. And just to be sure, you are telling me that if the POWER AMP volume on channel one is turned up too high, I can quickly blow the speakers? Or is it more like I have to watch the output from my pedal board into the amp? Thank you ahead of time!

Sunn
