1x10 combos that are really worth it... or a 2x10 would be a safer bet ?

Hi ! (modified the thread a bit for a broader discussion)

I like the sound of a good 10 inch speaker. Actually, I'm used to playing with 8 of them simultaniously (SVT).

Lately, I've been looking for a small practice combo that I could bring to an occasional jam with PA support. The Line 6 LowDown Studio 110 caught my attention because it's cheap and it sounds pretty good and loud on it's own. Is there anything else I should check out before I settle with the Line 6 ? It could be something more expensive... and it has to survive the use of a low B and an occasional octave pedal. Ideas ?

EDIT :

The portability and small footprint of a 1x10 is appealing to me, but I don't want an amp that will self destruct 'cause I push it too hard... if you see what I mean. A 2x10 could be an option, but it would still have to be smallish and lightish. I tried an Hartke Hydrive 210C once and liked it. Other ideas in that range ?

...an octave down?

I'm no expert, but I dunno if any 1x10 will survive a B0...

I had an Eden CXC-110(a 1x10 combo w/essentially a WT330- or 405 in later versions- for a head)& LOVED it. 220 watts w/internal speaker, could go to 2 ohms(meaning two 8ohm ext cabs)& was pretty impressive all by itself. 39 lbs or so.

I second the Genz-Benz option, but whether you think it sounds good at low B is up to you. If you're used to playing through an 8x10 you're not going to hear anything like the same sound. The size of the cab exerts real limitations...but the guys at G-B do some amazing things.

Somebody on this forum that's played both says the promethean 110 combo beats it at 1/2 price. Haven't seen one yet to try.

And I'm still itching to get my grubby fingers on the AI ten2. Extremely versatile.

That probably wasn't very helpful. Sorry.

Well... I might be wrong but... a 10 inch speaker is a 10 inch speaker. If an 8x10 survives a octave down, why not a single one ?

I've always been partial to the Roland Cube 30.

If a practice amp that might, occasionally, be ran to the board it's about all you need. If you want to go super cheap, I also thought the Ibanez Soundwave SW35 was pretty good.

I use a Fender Rumble 30 with 1x10 for practice and very small venues. It does surprisingly well with the low B on my Conklin. The even lower F# doesn't fare too well.

+1 Ibanez Soundwave SW35. This is a great practice amp and I still have mine.

Pity that Ampeg discontinued the BA110. I have one that I use mercilessly and it's got a great, clean, all-around great sound.

Hi.

I'm pretty happy with my SWR WM10.

It's got the speaker upgraded, but an occasional F# is a possibility if care is taken, also on monitor duty on gigs.

I will probably build an extension for it to add more flexibility, 80W with a single 10" only gets You so far .

Regards
Sam

For a truly reliable setup I for the stage, I would go with 2x10 or 1x12 at least. Of course, if youre doing very small venues the 10 would probably be fine.

+1 on the SWR WM10. I own one and also have the 1x10 extension cab. The combo alone is very surprising for such a small rig but the addition of the extension cab really opened things up. You'll be pushing 2x10's 100 watts @ 4ohms. Now these are discontinued in favor of SWR's new "wedge shaped thing" that does NOT allow the use of an extension cab.
Take a look on ebay. They pop up occasionally.

Shuttle 6.0-12T maybe ? Not a 10 inches, but could be great for what you want.

Shuttles are great. The 6.0 does 375 watts into a 12" or 2x10 that really pumps! Add an extension cab for 600 watts, enough for all but the biggest stages.
