1X15 or 2X10 cab?

Sign in to disble this ad
I'm looking to buy my cabs soon and I'm not sure what to put on the bottom. 1X15 or 2x10

Math obviously concludes this but I don't want to go strictly on common sense and buy something I don't like or will regret hearing about later after being on stage.

I remember a topic being talked about in my recording-engineering class that had to do with having 1 big amp cone or two smaller ones but wasn't sure which was better.

Any help will be much appreciated!!

You need to do a search. This topic is about as common as dirt and is discussed constantly here on TB. But when buying new gear can be a huge dillemma for many a bass player. Without any idea what your other cab is going to be, the amp you are using, your tone goals, volume requirements and portability issues, its very hard to make any kind of recommendation

However, I can say from experience that two identical matching cabs will likely produce better results then mixing cabs with different size speakers, even if they are the same brand and size of cabinet. That doesn't mean a mixed cab rig won't sound good, buts it a total gamble. I tried the 210 and 115 route for many years and was never happy. When i finally bought a matched pair of 210 cabs, I was amazed at how much better it sounded.

Now I use a matching pair of Mesa 115 cabs and the results are outstanding. Hope that helps!

Personally I like a 1x15. Most gigs I can get by with a single 1x15 cab. I've also gigged with my Genz Benz 2x10T-XB, but that is a very burly 2x10.

Sorry, friend. New to this forum and I tried searching 1x15 and nothing came up. I'll learn more terms the more I frequent this site so I won't be making mistakes.

I'm currently interested in the review I saw on the Epifani UL2 310's combined with an Eden 800 head but I was told that putting a larger amp on the bottom gives your lows a more projected sound so thats why I was troubleshooting whether or not that was fact.

Sounds like putting the larger on the bottom wasn't satisfactory.

Thanks. I'm trying to get myself more acquainted with a mainstream answer on things than just guessing at this on my own. I have a pretty good head on my shoulders -musically- since I've been classically trained on the double-bass since 5th grade but when it comes to electric bass I'm trying to accomplish the same tone as I would hear acoustic(ly) on it's larger, hollow-body epitome. Also, throwing in that I like Jazz and progressive/djent/metal and classical if its not shoved down my throat.

The Epi 310 is a great cab although I think it has some strange ohmage being 310's, so check if you will be able to combine it with a second cab with your amp head?

Putting a bigger speaker underneath is not neccesarily gonna give you a bigger/more projected sound, I would recommend another Epi 310 for best results, that would be a sweet rig

Ultimately you should try out some different cabs and see what gives you the tone you are looking for and then get 2 of those if you need more volume... that is the general concensus on here at the moment

we can generalize about how different cabs will sound, but there are no set rules anymore and your experience may be different to ours
