2011 PortaFlex "Semi-Stack?"

Sign in to disble this ad
So, a friend of mine, and a buddy of his (confusing already, I know) are going to start a jam/punk/reggae band, (think Sublime, Dirty Heads, The Expendables, Slightly Stoopid, etc, etc.) which is awesome for myself, because I'm sick and tired of 'working' at heavy metal that it's just no fun for me anymore. The three of us are ready to play the music that we've grown to know and love over the past decade.

Anywhozel, my dilemma is as follows... I have no cabinets anymore, I sold off my SVT stack to fund a useless trip/attempt to move across the country, and am now left with just my Ampeg VB4. (Hey, I'm not complaining now.) So, naturally I'm already looking at some new gear (and a new credit card... ) so that I can actually participate in said venture.

My initial thought was to just save up for an Avatar 2x12, and possibly a 2x10, and call it a day. HOWEVER, after perusing Ampeg's updated site for 2011, I found that they are offering the nifty flip-top 2x10 and 1x15 PortaFlex series as stand-alone cabinets rated at 8Ohms a piece.

Which got me thinking "Man that would make a killer bottom for my killer amp!" (I'm having issues finding an original matching cabinet for my amp.)

So, what do you guys think? Yeah, it's a little redundant taking "meant for combo" cabinets and staking them together, but man, I REALLY think it'd make a cool set-up for the small stages we plan on playing.

What's your opinion? Cool factor? Stupid factor? Am I out of my mind for thinking of snatching those cabs up for those prices to use a "semi-stack?"

Ampeg 2011 PortaFlex line.

The Portaflex cabs look promising - I dig the black diamond tolex. If you have a V4B and dig 10's, you might also check out the Micro VR 210AV cab. A couple of those would get you a 4 ohm load, and they should match your V4B cosmetics.

Same here, I really dig the way the look aesthetically, and the fact that I can cram all my cables into the cabinets is another plus for myself.

I did look at the VR210AV's previously, but didn't even think of them at this moment. Actually, two of those side-by-side should actually seat my amp atop with the feet in the cups perfectly.

I'm almost favoring a 2x10/1x15 setup just for the fact I'm going to be playing with fat, wooly, and deep settings.

I'm actually strongly considering picking up one of those 4x12's from 'Fliptops' and calling it a day though...

if i did the 210 av cabs, i'd put the head on bottom and stack the cabs vertically for better throw. i only have one of those cabs, but they do sound quite svt-like. the portaflex cabs are looking mighty good, too. fliptops cabs are pretty good as well. i think any way you go it'll be good.

Awesome, glad to know which ever way I go I should be alright...

...With this next band, I think we might even take stools on stage with us, and run just a tiny little PA setup. A lot of the bars in and around Lima are kind of small to take much bigger.

But then again, we will also be standing from time to time... I was thinking about options with the 210AV setup, considering using one of those foldaway amp stands that a lot of guys use for their combos. Then just throwing the second 210AV in front of me, as my monitor. (I could make a simple cradle from lumber, or uni-strut, or what-have-you.)

i personally use 2 of the 210 AV cabs with either the Micro VR head a V4B or a SVT VR...and in all cases i love those cabs...for me its a brilliant alternative when I am gigging in town or cant take /dont wanna take my 810 AV...and they are super portable and lite!

What's killing me right now, is that the (2)210AV, V4, and PortaFlex (meh, kind of) cabs are all within my price range, whereas the Avatar (in the configuration that I want) far exceeds what I am capable of spending. To be brutally honest, I don't have the money for any of these, lol.

So it looks like I'm either going to be siding with the (2)210AV cabs, or the V4 from FlipTops. (Unless of course I come across a music center that ACTUALLY stocks Ampeg gear, and not all that Acoustic flub, and am just smitten by the new PortaFlex cabs.)
