| | | | Is 2x10 the best cab?

Played my vintage P bass with flats through a 2x10 cab recently and was impressed by the tight mids and punch. Does this mean out there in the audience my bass tone is kicking harder than if I was using a bigger speaker array? I asked around afterwards but could'nt get much sense out of anyone..lol

| | | | No, it just means that where you were standing, you were impressed by the tight mids and punch. You'd have to ask people in the audience, but in general, a 2x10 will not project particularly well on it's own.

now if we could all just agree that Ps are in fact better than Js we could just close this place down once and for all.

As a stand alone, a single 210 is pretty much a rehearsal/small gig/on stage monitor with FOH support cabinet.
But...
Add another 210 and use the "two" 210 cabinets as a vertical stacked 410 and you've got a different story!
Better mids dispersion, better low end, fewer phase problems, and great projection. |

I've never been a fan of 2x10 cabs.
The sound OK, when your standing next to them.
But, they do no project into crowd.
I prefer 6x10 cabs, if I'm using 10's.
2x15, is my favorite cab. |

It's hard for me to think of any other speaker config that has so many variations. Some have ZERO bass response, some have tons of bass (for their size). Some are loud as hell and others are not very loud but have good freq response. I wouldnt want to depend on only a 2x10 unless it was one butt kicking mother of all 2x10's. 2x12"s however cover much more ground it seems than 2x10" cabs. I mostly prefer 4x10" or 1x15 if I am going for a manageable sized single cab.

If we're expecting a bunch of people I'll bring another cab, but if there's a real FOH or it's just a bar gig, this little combo is more than adequate.
It also depends on your other gear (bass, effects, compression, etc) and the rest of the band, obviously. | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
