2x112 rig or 2x10 + 115

Hey guys

So currently I'm rolling an SWR Goliath Jr 2x10 + SWR Bertha 115 with my Eden WT550. I love the head, but lately the cabs haven't been rocking me in terms of tone, too modern and not as 'full' tonally as I need for the type of music I play (alt rock mainly).

Having said that I'm seriously considering pulling the trigger on some Aguilar SL112s in the hope of getting a more uniform sound from the matching drivers, plus the lighter weight to save my back.

So what do you 12" speaker nuts think? How does a few 12's stacked go tonally, volume wise and aesthetically (silly question, but I'm just keen to see how much space a 2x112 stack takes against say a 4x10).

Cheers

In most cases the 410 is going have a higher SPL than two 112s but personally I like 12’s better than 10s - of course this is only my opinion.

You're right with the matched speakers sounding more uniform. The mixed rig has different frequency areas either nulled or enhanced that will work either for or against your ear and is generally harder to dial in in a room. I usually find mixed rigs to still sound full in the lower frequencies but lose definition further up, maybe more cancellations up there?

I don't know any specifics of Aguilar's drivers but a pair of good 12's will make as much noise as a typical 15+210 stack.

I've been gigging with one or two 112s for the last few years driven by a Shuttle 6.0

Devastating rig. Crushes most clubs with ease.

You know what I like even better?

Driving the same pair of old school Avatar 112s with my new Streamliner 900!

I belive you're on the right track. I use the WT 550 too, and from what cabs I tested I came to the opinion that cabs (or stacks) with a rather scooped voicing are no good match for the WT 550. On the other hand, 12"s work really good with that amp. I own four 112 cabs. How many I bring to the gig depends on the size of the venue.

I would take a pair of quality 1x12 cabs over a 1x15 + 2x10 combination any day of the week...

I have two Aguilar SL 112's and I own a Bergantino HT 112Er and a Bergantino 112 EX/XR and I own a Epifani UL410. The two 12's of either combination is all I need for 95% of all of my gigs. When I play an outdoor gig I take the 410. A lot has to do with your amp. I use either an Epifani UL 902c (900 watts a side) or a Epifani 501 (at 4ohms its 800 watts). If you give those speakers good clean power, they can do the job, and they sound fantastic.

I use 2 Bergantino AE 112 with a Genz Benz Shuttle 6 and love the sound I'm getting, i play in a functions band but we have a rock blow out every month and this setup handles everything you can throw at it, keep an eye out for second hand AE112 as the new ceramic range comes out shortly, as you will see guys & gals changing for the new range, and by all means the new cabs are supposed to be even better, i find this hard to believe

Had it wide open in a big rock club last night and it CRUSHED.

Didn't even come close to waffling, and had balls for days.
Lame phone pic, but once the lights and fog started flying, this was the best I could get with my droid.

Streamliner 900 + Two Avatar cube 112s = KaBOOM.

total rig weight around 65lbs.

65.5 with the Blue Light.

The best sounding cab I have ever used was an Accugroove Whappo Jr. - 2x12 with mid and tweets. I really miss it!
