Is A 2x12 Cabinet Too Much for the Bedroom?

Hi guys,

So I have an oppourtunity to purchase a 2x12 cabinet and get rid of my 2x10. I don't get to gig my amp too often, as I usually go DI these days. But do you guys think a 212 cabinet is overkill for a bedroom apartment? I would be running it with a GK 700RBII. I'm getting the 2x12 at a great deal, plus I'm sure it'll pump more lows than my 2x10 if I did gig with it... Opinions? Thanks!

If you actually like the 2x12 better than your 2x10, get it.

Amps have a volume knob for a reason.

My bedroom rig is a 210 + 115 and I'm actually looking to move to a 212. Actually I'm looking to do 2x112 stack, but still.

Like you I usually gig through a DI, but I still want a rig worthy of being played live if the opportunity arises to do so, and 12's are currently what do it for me.

What are you worrying about? THIS is too big for your bedroom.

Too big for the bedroom?

What are you using it for in there?

Seriously though, your amp does have a volume control, doesn't it?

That sums it up!
Get what you want. Only you know what sounds good to you; and only you know if you feel a need to justify your purchase.

You should never put any cab smaller than an 810 in your bedroom!

In all seriousness, I would not play a 2x12 in a bedroom unless your bedroom is really large. My home studio is a converted dining room. I have a Thunderchild 115 that sounds amazing at the gig, but it's way too large for the home studio. It overpowers the room and rattles the rafters, even at low volume. I prefer using a smaller Crazy88 (2 eight inch drivers + tweeter), or even a single Crazy8. Those smaller cabs fill the room just right with deep, clear bass. Every tool has its purpose, and some tools can be too big for the job.

Just don't ASSUME that the 212 will give more LOWS than your current 210. Cab design might surprise you.

What are the 2 cabs?

Does it block your view of the mirror on the ceiling?

I would simply get the Mesa because I'm such a fanboy (and yes I have PH212, absolutely love it).
But with that said, any 2x10 I've owned was capable destroying a bedroom.

I think it's probably too loud, not the cab itself but with that amp. I tried in my room a 200 watt Trace Elliott with both a 1x12" and 1x15". Now the first few notches on the volume it was super quiet, then I got to the next notch and it was so loud, that after playing for a few minutes my ears were ringing.

Perhaps I'm wrong and your amp has a smoother taper though.

If there is no drummer, you dont need much, 1x10 would suffice...

Yes, way overkill. But if you've got room for it, why the heck not?

Right now I'm using my Shuttle 9.0 and AE410 in my practice room, which is smaller than a bedroom.
