2x15" speaker configuration question

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey All,

Wanted to get some opinions on this...

I'm a 2x15 guy, and currently use 2 -1x15 cabs. I would like to have a single 4ohm cab with 2x15 in it. All the 2x15 cabs I've seen out there stack the speakers vertically. I want to make the cab as small as possible. What do ya'll think about this?

Thinking about having a custom cab made (LDS possibly). I would like the cab to be 25" across (to fit my head), and with my configuration it would need to be about 27" or so tall. Probably about 16" deep. Might put a small port or two in the bottom, but kind of like sealed cabs.

This would not be much bigger than a 4x10. It would end up being smaller than the ampeg SVT 410 hlf.

Why does no one do this? Are there any cabs out there like this - I've never seen one. Why not? Any problem running 2x15s this way?

Any of you sound engineer / speaker science types care to comment? Would this cause some kind of weirdness as opposed to two vertically stacked speakers?

The Bergantino NV215 has offset alignment. Actually, there's quite a few that do that...I think...even though I'm drawing a blank on the others. No problem running them that way as long as interior volume and proper porting is maintained.

Your drawing shows virtually no wood on the baffle between the speakers, or above and below. By the time you allow for a few inches of wood there, you're very close to the height of a vertical 2x15.

Fender offered one like that in the 70's, but a lot of people on this forum think that they're too small for 2x15's. however, i personally think that mine sounds great with two 15" JBL K140's.

Vertical is easier to move, moves the drivers closer to ear level, and has better horizontal dispersion. With modern 15’s you shouldn’t need more than 2 (capable of over 130 db) so stacking multiple cabs is a moot point.

Nothing weird, but you'll lose horizontal dispersion. One of the reasons vertical 2x15s sound so good is because they are vertical. Not having them vertical sacrifices function for form, as in 'it looks better when the amp doesn't hang over the ends'.
