3/4" maple flooring for cab?

Sign in to disble this ad
Yes, I'm a cheap b@st@rd, but in this case it could be considered frugal and green as well. Anyway, I have all this unused 3/4" maple flooring and a couple of 3015 drivers and thought I might make a couple 1x15 cabs. I'd probably glue the flooring together to make appropriate sized pieces and go from there. Would the flooring work acoustically? Would it break my back to lift the final product? Other concerns?

Hardwood planks are typically too resonant and too heavy to use for a bass cab.

You can get 1/2" A/C or B/C plywood at the home depot for so cheap I wouldn't worry about it. I went down and had some 3/8" BC cut to my panel specs; they did it with a 1/16" tolerance and my out the door was 20 bucks for an entire 1x12 cabinet worth of wood with lots left over for bracing.

I can't see flooring as having the structural integrity to serve, regardless of how carefully you glued it together. And yes, it would weigh a TON.

Sell the flooring on Craigslist and use something more appropriate for the cab.

But - extra points for creative thinking!

If it's solid wood, then it will expand and contract more than plywood. Even if sealed well. The internal moisture will expand/contract with temperature.
It also makes for a heavy expensive box - but darn good looking.

Sell the flooring as flooring and use the money to by baltic (like) birch or appleply

I don't know enough about the science of cabs to comment on acoustic properties - but I know plenty about wood and woodworking. More than enough to confirm that it will be far too heavy to be worth it.

You know everyone says to use baltic birch and all that; I am finding that BC/AC from the local home depot / lowes is plenty easy to work with. If braced sufficiently and covered with a tough coating, I don't think it's likely to have any negative effect.

If I could get a hold of poplar I would, but otherwise the 20% weight savings using nice quality AC pine is enough to make me go that way instead of BB.

I'd use baltic birch if I could find it in 3/8 reliably I think but not otherwise.

Umm... glue a bunch of it together and make a bass out of it?

Wow, what about those jillions of MDF cabs out there?

I'm pretty much with you on this.

I mostly agree. It's just that DIY really isn't about saving money. It's a lot about making it better than you can buy.

That's the thing, it used (has some nail/staples in it) and it was just one room's worth so I doubt if anyone would buy it. But I can't bear to pitch it. I made one heck of a laundry chute/holder in the basement but that used less than half of it. Off topic now so I'll get off the PC and go back to my cave...

They are extremely (and unnecessarily) heavy. Not a good thing, IMO.
