3012LF in an epi UL112 box???

I know its often a risk dropping a driver in a box, but...

I have two LDS 112s coming my way shortly which will replace my UL112s. However, one of my UL112s has a blown speaker and I am thinking of putting an Eminence 3012LF in it, perhaps attaching one of those telescoping handle dollies onto it, and using it as a rehearsal cab. Re-coning the existing blown B&C driver is going to be close to the cost of the Eminence 3012LF, according to estimates I have gotten locally.

I have been wanting a small, light cab that can handle alot of punishment at rehearsals as one of the drummers I play with is REALLY loud when practicing. I was thinking of getting a Bag End S15D, but realized it would be more cost effective to just keep what I have, drop in a heavy duty driver, and abuse the hell out of it.

My LDS 112s will have the 3012HOs in them and the boxes are pretty much the same dimensions as the UL 112 (20x16x16). So I dont think its too much of a stretch to put the 3012LF in it. I realize that the Eminence 3012LF is more of a sub driver, but thats fine as I can just eq some upper bass & low-mids into it. I dont care for much in the way of highs in my tone. I'm looking at the Eminence 3012LF because I want a robust driver that can handle a lot of punishment yet still be (hopefully) suitable to the UL112 box.

How much of a crap-shoot am I getting myself into?

The 3012LF wants over twice the internal space a 3012HO wants. Use an HO, not an LF.

When you say "wants twice the internal space" can you elaborate?

Its my understanding that the fEarful 12/6 uses a 3012LF and measures 24x15x16 so thats only "roughly" a 4 inch difference. I know that mid driver makes a big difference in terms of high-end content in the 12/6, but as I mentioned high-end / upper mids is a non-issue for me.

All that said, what negative result would I get if I put the 3012LF in the 20x16x16 UL112 box?

The fEarful 12/6 is 1/2" ply, and ballpark 4200 cubic inches. Your 3/4" cab at 20x16x16 is ballpark 3600 cubic inches. After stuffing and driver displacement you're looking at around 1.8cf vs. 2.2cf.

In a box that size, the 3012LF will not significantly outperform the 3012HO, and should lose out quite a bit above 100hz.

In a 2.2cf box you're looking at around a 2db advantage and twice the power handling at 60hz -- in a 1.8cf box you're looking at a .5db advantage and twice the power handling (only under 100hz).

If you have a 3012LF on hand it'll be fine. But you'd get more mileage out of a 3012HO in my opinion.
